Mission Statement

Cape Ann Animal Aid is a non-profit, no kill organization dedicated to facilitating appropriate placement of adoptable animals and enhancing the lives of all companion animals by promoting respect and well-being through education and outreach.

About This Cause

Cape Ann Animal Aid (CAAA) was established in 1964 with a mission to facilitate appropriate placement of adoptable animals and enhance the lives of all companion animals by promoting respect and well-being through education and outreach. In the fifty plus years since its creation, CAAA has become a well-respected and valued asset within the Cape Ann and greater Essex County community. For over 30 years, CAAA operated within a modest facility on Main Street in Gloucester, MA. In 2012, the organization moved into the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter, a newly constructed, state-of-the-art animal sheltering facility in Gloucester, MA. This new facility allowed for an increase in the number of animals and number and ways community members are served. In 2024 the organization expanded with a 2 floor addition named, the Walter & Yvonne Wood Wing of Hope. The expansion added 3 additional specialty animal housing rooms, a veterinary recovery room, 3 program offices and a large indoor play and behavior room. CAAA provides all animals in its care with specialized attention from trained staff and volunteers who spend time handling, grooming, socializing, training, and interacting with each animal. The dogs receive daily exercise in enclosed play areas or on walks; the cats benefit from extended time outside of cages where they can investigate, play, and interact with humans and other cats. Going beyond these comforts, CAAA takes measures to secure each animal’s health and well-being prior to adoption. Animals receive any needed sick or emergency care, spay/neuter and/or dental surgery, along with a routine medical exam by a licensed veterinarian, are administered age-appropriate vaccinations, and receive preventative treatments against parasites, heartworms, fleas and ticks. These services are completed by the on-staff Veterinarian and Veterinary Technicians and not only ensure the safety and well-being of the animals, but also reduce risk of exposure to adopters and the general community from any potential zoonotic diseases. CAAA also provides veterinary care services for qualifying conditions in the first 2 weeks post adoption and vaccination services for recently adopted pets in the first 30 days post adoption to ensure access to veterinary care does n ot negatively impact the health of the newly adopted pet nor put strain on the new family relationship being formed between the pet and their new family members. CAAA takes a proactive approach to curbing pet overpopulation problems by spaying and neutering any unfixed animals before they are adopted. CAAA provides low cost or free pet spay/neuter assistance for qualifying community members through both the CAAA Spay Mama Program and partnering with the state's Massachuesetts Animal Fund. CAAA also provides low-cost vaccine and microchipping services for owned pets on an appointment basis. Furthermore, CAAA’s humane education efforts and hands-on volunteer program help promote community engagement. Volunteer activities for all abilities and ages along with youth summer and school vacation programs enrich the human-animal bond, and educate minds both young and mature in the greater community.
