Joining with citizens across the country, we combine technical analysis and effective advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions for a healthy, safe, and sustainable future.
About This Cause
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) works to ensure that independent, unbiased science informs and shapes problem-solving policies that build a healthier and safer world. We devise innovative solutions to create cleaner air, energy, and transportation, to ensure food is produced in a safe and sustainable manner, and to build a future free from the threats of climate change and nuclear war. Our recent work and accomplishments include: • Successfully fighting back against politically motivated attacks on climate scientists, in the courts and through public statements that have earned the support of hundreds of scientists around the country. • Reducing U.S. heat-trapping emissions by accelerating the transition from coal-fired power generation and older cars and trucks to energy sources and engines that generate less pollution. • Reducing the threat of nuclear weapons. We helped secure the signing of the New START treaty, which lowers the risks posed by U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals. • Winning international protections for rain forests that will keep at least 300 million tons of global warming emissions out of the atmosphere each year. • Highlighting the risks of nuclear power by providing daily analysis of the Fukushima disaster in Japan, accompanied by recommendations that would prevent a similar crisis in the U.S. • Working to end U.S. government subsidies for unhealthy, processed foods and to instead direct our taxpayer dollars to support farmers who grow healthy food and utilize farming practices that protect our health, land, air, and water. • Playing a critical role in securing reforms to help ensure scientific integrity in federal policy making. We helped more than a dozen federal agencies develop policies that will make government more transparent and reduce political interference in the science guiding policy decisions. UCS stands out from among nonprofit organizations as the reliable source for independent scientific analysis. Whether the challenge is climate change, the quest for cleaner, more fuel efficient vehicles and renewable energy sources, healthy food and agriculture systems or ensuring the safety and security of our nuclear power plants, UCS provides the essential expertise and strategic solutions to the most complex issues we face today.
