About This Cause
Wayside’s story began in 1977 when a group of citizens formed one of the first residences in New England for runaway and homeless youth—Harbinger House. As the need for alternatives to orphanages, reform schools, and psychiatric hospitals grew, Wayside responded by expanding to include an array of services which support youth and families in their community. Over the years, the Wayside network has incorporated a number of long-standing, local community organizations. They share Wayside’s commitment to helping the children and families of the region, complementing Wayside’s overall spectrum of care. Today, Wayside is one of Massachusetts’ most respected child and family serving agencies. Wayside’s programs and services are broken into two main components. Wayside’s RESIDENTIAL & DAY SERVICES component includes the Wayside Campus for adolescent boys and girls. The Campus features six residential townhouses serving 12 teens each; Wayside Academy, a chapter 766 special-education school; Wayside Day Center, a psychiatric day treatment and partial hospital program; gym and sports facilities; and onsite nursing and clinical staff. Wayside also operates two additional residential programs for young adults: the Prescott program in Arlington for young adults (ages 18-25) with serious mental health conditions, and ShortStop Transitional Housing for homeless young adults in Somerville. The COMMUNITY SERVICES component is comprised of two programs of In Home Therapy and related counseling services delivered in over 60 communities from Boston to Worcester; outpatient counseling clinics in Framingham, Milford and Waltham; the Community Service Agency for the Framingham Area, offering care coordination through the Children’s Behavioral Health Initiative; and Mobile Crisis Intervention for youth experiencing a behavioral health crisis. Other Community Services are counseling for victims of sexual assault, parent support groups, substance abuse prevention and youth development programming. The agency is governed by a twelve-member Board, which meets ten times annually. The Board sets the agency’s strategic plan. Women represent 33% of the Board, and minorities comprise 33% as well. A Board list is attached. Wayside employs 421 staff including licensed clinicians, medical and nursing staff, special education teachers, residential counselors and administrators. 65% are full-time and 35% are part-time or provisional.
