Mission Statement
The mission of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra is to bring the vibrant joy of great music to new and existing audiences through engagement and connection with the music, the players and the conductor. Through our music, the BPO aspires to expand the human possibility and redefine and reinvigorate the classical music experience for audiences and players alike.
About This Cause
The Boston Philharmonic is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to fulfilling a vision of "passionate music making without boundaries." The Boston Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO), founded by Benjamin Zander in 1979, features student, professional, and amateur musicians who present premier performances of top-notch classical music that is accessible and enjoyable for both music aficionados and the casual listener. The Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (BPYO), founded in 2012, is a world-class, tuition-free ensemble that inspires passionate music-making in young musicians aged 12 to 21 and follow a motto of "shaping future leaders through music." Sharing and inspiring a love of classical music in all parts of our community is a goal accomplished in many ways. Boston Philharmonic concerts include an innovative pre-concert talk with conductor Benjamin Zander, whose explication and expansion of musical concepts, emotional expression, and other elements of music-making are unparalleled. Zander has a unique, engaging approach to explaining classical music, and his intense passion for the art form attracts hundreds of attendees for each talk. As a result, our audience describes the Boston Philharmonic as "passionate," "inspiring," "unique," and--perhaps our favorite descriptor--"un-stuffy." Our community engagement programs, called Crescendo!, bring music education and mentorship to classrooms and after-school programs across Greater Boston, led by teaching artists who are members of the BPO or BPYO. In addition, the Kids' Notes programs and pre-concert talks for children tailor performance information and musical knowledge for our youngest audience members, helping to cultivate a life-long appreciation and understanding of classical music. Other members of our community serve as ambassadors of the BPO to their professional or social networks, including a network of colleges and universities who participate in Club BP to help bring affordable tickets and engaging community to new audience members.
