Mission Statement
The mission of Cooperative Elder Services, Inc. (CESI) is to empower seniors and adults with medical or cognitive challenges to age-in-place by serving their health and socialization needs and providing support for families.
About This Cause
Founded in 1979, CESI operates five private, non-profit adult day health centers in the greater Boston area: Arlington, Burlington, Concord, Groton, and Milton. CESI serves 550 seniors and adults with medical or cognitive challenges (along with their caregivers) who each year make 40,000 daily visits to CESI’s centers. Seventy percent of CESI participants are low income, 80% live with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia, 75% live with multiple chronic conditions (such as diabetes, heart disease, or Parkinson’s disease) and the average age is 85. CESI’s eight-hour-long adult day health programming is comprised of comprehensive nursing care, therapeutic activities, transportation services, service coordination, individualized nutrition, and caregiver support. CESI programming empowers participants to maintain their highest level of functioning, as well as emotional and physical independence. As a result, participants delay placement in expensive nursing homes and family caregivers can remain in the workforce and gain respite. CESI provides participants with an environment that supports their whole health: one in which they can socialize with peers, participate in meaningful activities, exercise their minds and bodies, learn to manage their chronic diseases, and maintain compliance with physicians’ orders – all for a cost that is less than half that of home health aide services (which do not include medical care) and one-fifth that of the cost of one day of nursing home care.
