Mission Statement

The mission of the Boston Tax Help Coalition is to broaden pathways from poverty to financial empowerment by maximizing the impact of the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits through quality, free tax preparation, financial education and economic stability opportunities.

About This Cause

The Boston Tax Help Coalition (BTHC) is a cross-sector collaboration launched in 2001 to assist low and moderate-income (LMI) taxpayers in claiming the $10 million of unclaimed Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) dollars left on the table in Boston (2001 IRS estimates). Since its inception, BTHC has recruited and trained over 7,000 volunteers, prepared more than 176,892 free tax returns, and generated more than $315,810 million in tax refunds and credits for LMI families. BTHC’s work builds long-term economic security through providing families tailored financial services and credit building opportunities, sustained through committed volunteers and stakeholder partnerships. Services include inclusive and multicultural tax education and preparation, financial capability programs, credit building at tax time through the Financial Check-up (FCU), as well as banking inclusion through our companion program, Bank On Boston (Bank On is a national initiative that connects LMI residents with non-predatory banking products). BTHC recognizes that impacting poverty and helping households develop economic security requires building trust in the community and meeting residents where they are at. Our programs and practices revolve around developing agency for participants and we treat all participants with dignity and respect. We utilize the framework of the EITC as a tool to build both individual and community wealth. Tax preparation, the FCU and banking inclusion provide access to the financial mainstream and are good for the local economy as well as good for households’ bottom line.
