Mission Statement

By living the gospel message upon which the ministry is founded, we restore dignity and self-respect to our guests – individuals and families who are poor, underserved and homeless – to empower them to move forward in their lives.

About This Cause

Lazarus House helps families and individuals living in poverty meet their basic survival needs and build their capacity for long-term stability. Since our founding in 1982, Lazarus House has been recognized for delivering effective, compassionate services in Lawrence, MA, one of the poorest communities in the Commonwealth. Initially a five-bed shelter with an all-volunteer staff, Lazarus House’s staff of 52, assisted by upwards of 5,000 volunteers, today serves17,000+ unduplicated households (68,000 individuals) annually. We provide: -Nourishment, through daily served meals (300+) in our Soup Kitchen and weekly groceries (1100+ families) through our Pantry. -Stability, through emergency shelter and transitional housing for families (100+ people per year). Holistic, trauma-informed care provided to every family by Masters-level case managers and life skills education, including intensive financial mentoring and wellness coaching, enables families to improve their stability and wellbeing. Every year, 90+% of families graduate from our transitional housing program into homes of their own. -Comfort, through highly affordable clothing, housewares, and furniture at our thrift store. Those facing dire need receive vouchers for free items. -Care and Guidance, through advocacy and case management. Lazarus House serves all men, women, and children who come to us in need. We place no geographic restriction on our service delivery. Given the scope of need in Lawrence, 95% of our Guests are Lawrence residents; the rest come from neighboring Merrimack Valley communities such as Methuen, Haverhill, Andover, North Andover, Lowell, and Salem, NH; Greater Boston, and farther afield. Reflective of Lawrence’s large Latino population, 75-80% of our Guests are Latino. Nearly 80% of our guests are members of families that include dependent children. Receiving less than 1% of our annual operating budget from government sources, Lazarus House thrives thanks to the many local businesses, private foundations, faith communities, community organizations, individuals, and the nearly 5,000 volunteers who contribute funds, goods, and services every year. Overall, Lazarus House sustains partnerships with more than 60 local agencies, including medical and behavioral health providers, shelter and housing providers, legal services, educational and vocational service organizations and programs serving elders, people with disabilities, and families. These linkages enable us to offer holistic care to Guests.
