Mission Statement

The Literacy Project provides free basic literacy and high school equivalency classes to adults in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts. In small, comfortable classes, students study at their own pace to reach their goals and move on to college and careers. Staff instructors are assisted by a team of volunteer tutors to ensure that all students get the attention they need.

About This Cause

Every student has a story: some dropped out of school as soon as they were old enough to work. Others left to avoid gang violence in the hallways. Some struggled academically and never got the help they needed; others had no trouble with the school work but struggled to fit in socially. Some are immigrants who fled a country at war; others have never left the small town they were born in. Some are 16; others are 76. What all of these students have in common is their commitment to learn. They come to The Literacy Project when they are ready: ready to go back to school, ready to move forward with their education, ready to change their lives for the better. Whatever their story and whatever their goals, the adults who take classes at The Literacy Project find a positive learning environment with small classes and lots of individual attention. Teachers and volunteers work with each student to set goals, measure progress - and celebrate success! We teach reading, writing, math, science, social studies, career planning, and computer skills The Literacy Project has offered basic education classes to adults since 1984, with classrooms in Amherst, Northampton, Greenfield, Orange and Ware, Massachusetts.
