Mission Statement
Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC) is dedicated to artistic excellence, accessibility, and education. We present plays of the highest artistic caliber that celebrate ideas and language to create dialogue around compelling issues of our time. We eliminate barriers – physical, economic, and cultural – to bring live theater to audiences throughout Greater Boston. We cultivate in young artists the value of community engagement, and collaborate with educators to bring literature to life in the classroom.
About This Cause
In 1996, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC) Founding Artistic Director Steven Maler collaborated with the City of Boston, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, and the Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs to present a free outdoor production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in Copley Square. Ed Siegel of The Boston Globe described it as “fully engaging, with one of the most diverse audiences ever seen in Boston.” Midsummer was chosen as one of the top ten productions of the year by the Globe, and Mr. Maler received the Eliot Norton Award for his outstanding direction. Carolyn Clay of The Boston Phoenix wrote, “how proud it is for Boston to finally offer free Shakespeare.” Following the success of "Midsummer," CSC presented "Romeo and Juliet" in August 1997 at the newly renovated Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common, where the Company still performs today. Now in its 24th season, CSC’s Free Shakespeare on the Common has become a beloved summer tradition and one of Boston’s most highly attended annual arts events, drawing upwards of 50,000 attendees over three weeks. Since 1997, CSC has received 9 Elliot Norton and 6 Independent Reviewers of New England Awards. Over the years, CSC has expanded its programming to include several play-reading series, including Theatre in the Rough and Shakespeare & Leadership. The Company fulfills its educational mission with training programs for pre-professional actors through its Apprentice Program and early-career artists through CSC2. Throughout the year, CSC’s partners with area schools and Boys & Girls Clubs to provide in- and after-school theatre residencies and workshops. The Company produced its first fully stage, ticketed, indoor play – the world premiere of Robert Brustein’s “The Last Will” – at Suffolk University’s Modern Theatre in 2013 to critical praise. CSC kicked-off of its 20th Anniversary Season on September 19, 2014, with Shakespeare at Fenway, the first event of its kind at a major league ballpark featuring actors from stage and screen. Other recent productions include Samuel Beckett’s “Happy Days,” and Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” “Coriolanus,” and “All’s Well That Ends Well” (2012 Elliot Norton Award-winner for Best Production, Large Theater).
