About This Cause
Capen hill Nature Sanctuary is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. It is located in the town of Charlton, MA. The mission as outlined in it's charter, is to maintain and preserve the 86 acres of land, protect it, and enhance the appreciation of the natural environment by creating innovative outdoor learning experiences through environmental opportunities for the public. Philanthropist Ruth Dyer Wells, founded the sanctuary in 1977 through a gift. Year round we offer tailored made programs to schools, scouts, home schooled groups or individuals as well as a Science and Nature camp for residents of the town of Charlton and its surrounding communities. These programs are hands on using the sanctuary as a classroom. Our specialty is pond life, a hands on program with our resident animals and wildlife hikes. Capen Hill has had visitors from all aver the country and overseas. The sanctuary is open to everyone free of charge. The visitor center is the home of around 40 animal residents that we use for a hands on educational program for children. We also have a science library, a great mineral collection behind glass as well as a gift shop. We are also supporters of The Last Green Valley which is called a National Heritage Corridor that spans 35 towns in northeastern Connecticut and south central Massachusetts. It is rural and historic. With 1,100 square miles that are still 77% forest and farms. The pastoral landscape is interspersed with powerful rivers, mill villages, and vibrant towns. The Last Green Valley is said to be green by day and dark by night because it is the last stretch of dark night sky in the coastal sprawl between Boston and Washington D.C. Capen Hill is proud to partner with this amazing organization. Capen Hill Nature Sanctuary is a gem in south central Massachusetts and is a great place for folks to take in nature and walk our beautiful trails. We also have several certified vernal pools which is wonderful so people can see how this changes every year. During Covid we were one of the few areas that kept are trails open which was a lifesaver for many folks and their mental health. We received so many letters from people who were so grateful that we are there. Capen Hill Nature Sanctuary is a special place for Charlton and surrounding areas!
