Mission Statement

The Multicultural AIDS Coalition is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation located in Boston, MA. Our mission is to mobilize communities of color to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Since 1989, MAC has worked to ensure high quality, accessible prevention and care services for people living with HIV or at high risk of infection. MAC supports broader efforts to eradicate conditions that fuel the epidemic, including substance abuse, health disparities and lack of health care access, homelessness, and discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. All services are trauma informed and provided within harm reduction framework.

About This Cause

MAC provides comprehensive HIV/HCV/STI Screening, Psychosocial Peer Support, Non-Medical Case Management, and Health Navigation to primary care, mental health care and support services. The agency engages with a range of academic partners on HIV prevention research, and offers cultural competency training, technical assistance, and capacity building services to clinicians and organizations seeking to improve their services to populations. Some of the key programs include the following: • Women Connecting Affecting Change (WCAC) – offers prevention services to women of color in Boston neighborhoods, including those living with HIV, or at risk due to injection drug use or engagement in sex work. WCAC provides testing, needle exchange, wound care, overdose prevention training, as well as Ryan White funded services. WCAC is located on Blue Hill Avenue in Dorchester, with programs operating from a storefont facility that is well known in the community. • CONNECTED Boston, a program conceived by Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ people of color, is a resource for sexual health education and services. In addition to screening, referral, and Ryan White funded services, the MSM program emphasizes PrEP assessment, navigation and enrollment through the state’s PrEP DAP program. CONNECTED Boston primarily reaches Black and Latinx gay and bisexual men, non-binary men, and transgender women and men. • Africans For Improved Access (AFIA) partners with African organizations and businesses to provide HIV prevention education/mobilization and HIV/STI screening services for African immigrants. It was the first HIV program targeting African immigrants supported by the state health department. Research on barriers to testing and services is a priority. • Casa Iris offers individual advocacy, case management, and peer support services to Latinx clients in the area, serving a diverse group of men and women. Casa Iris was originally started by Iris Rivera, who welcomed individuals needing support into her living room. Technical Assistance & Capacity Building Community Health Nexus is MAC’s Technical Assistance & Capacity Development program, designed to enhance service provision at community and faith organizations reaching our target populations. TACD is offered in workgroups or individual meetings. MAC’s capacity building services were launched with a $4 million, 6-year U.S. Office of Minority Health funded initiative that provided training and technical assistance to over 2000 staff of 400 organizations, requiring extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluation documenting levels of service provided, cost, data on the recipients, and analysis of participant satisfaction. This included design and implementation of the “Black Communities & HIV Conference Series,” a 4-part initiative with components focused on MSM of Color, Black Immigrants, Black Women, and the Black community overall. Several hundred attendees participated. MAC has been a community partner under contract with the New England AIDS Education & Training Center to provide cultural competency training on reaching and serving the populations in communities of color that we serve. HIV Prevention Research MAC has provided community education on biomedical HIV prevention research and interventions since 2004, establishing partnerships with Massachusetts General Hospital, The Fenway Institute, University of Massachusetts, CDC, HRSA and other institutions that focus on HIV prevention research. MAC’s collaborative efforts have included participation in studies on topics such as: the HIV Prevention Trails Network 061 Study of Black MSM; a PCORI study on Building Partnership for Addressing HIV among African Immigrants; a study on Consideration of Cultural-Specific Factors Related to Health Literacy; a HRSA Special Projects of National Significance study on developing peer navigation models; development of an evidenced-based intervention for Black MSM who experience discrimination based on race, HIV status, and sexual orientation. Fiscal Capacity and Fiscal Management Services MAC has experience implementing and managing multi-year, multi-faceted projects with extensive data collection, financial reporting and evaluation requirements. MAC has served as a vital community resource for fiscal management over the past 20 years, providing oversight of public and private funds that are awarded to smaller agencies or individuals without adequate fiscal infrastructure required by funders. MAC engages an independent accounting firm to conduct annual audits which are required by public funders. There have been no audit findings over the past 18 years.
