Mission Statement
The Old North Church, is Boston’s oldest surviving church building and one of its most visited historical sites. We are located in the North End of Boston on the well known and traveled Freedom Trail.
About This Cause
Founded in 1722, Christ Church in the City of Boston, known to all as the Old North Church, is Boston’s oldest surviving church building and one of its most visited historical sites. The Old North Foundation promotes values of freedom, liberty, and civic engagement through the interpretation and preservation of the Old North Church, an enduring symbol of American independence. The Foundation serves a wide audience by creating meaningful experiences through educational outreach, site-specific programming, and historical analysis. Each year over 500,000 people visit the church, including thousands of school children, to learn about the hanging of the signal lanterns on the eve of the American Revolution, April 18th, 1775. On that night, two members of the church carried out a plan created by Paul Revere. They hung two lanterns in the Old North Steeple to signal to patriot riders that British troops were leaving Boston on a mission to capture arms and ammunition that colonists had hidden the countryside. As Paul Revere and other riders spread the alarm, colonists gathered in Lexington and what resulted was the first battle of the American Revolution. In addition to the Old North Church, the Old North campus also includes: The 1713 Clough House, one of Boston’s oldest surviving brick residences, which houses the Print Shop of Edes & Gill and Captain Jackson’s Historic Chocolate Shop. A chapel built in 1918 for Italian immigrants, which now serves as the Old North Gift Shop. And three large courtyards, and two formal gardens
