Mission Statement
The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. (ILC) of Malden, MA, is a not-for-profit organization that gives immigrants a voice in three ways. The English Language Program provides free, year-round English classes to help immigrant and refugee adults in Greater Boston become successful workers, parents and community members. The Public Education Institute informs Americans about the economic and social contributions of immigrants in our society, and the Institute for Immigration Research, a joint venture with George Mason University, conducts research on the economic contributions of immigrants.
About This Cause
Since 1992 The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. (ILC) has helped more than 11,500 immigrant and refugee adults through year-round, free, intensive, English classes, citizenship classes, workshops, and career and education counseling. Our English Language classes are offered year-round in morning and afternoon sessions. Levels 1-4 address a range of English proficiency from very low and beginning to intermediate levels. All classes are intensive (12 - 12.5 hours a week) and instruction is in English only for a total immersion experience that accelerates learning. The curriculum incorporates civics, financial literacy, and life skills to help students navigate our complex social systems and create plans for the future. Next Steps Workshops prepare students to transition successfully to further education or career goals. Advisors work with students to develop a plan that reflects short- and long-term goals. Students investigate programs which may include job search skills, job training, higher education, career development, or professional re-certification. Students are coached in resume writing, interviewing skills, phone calls, professional emails and workplace culture as well as details on the American educational systems including credits, degrees, financial aid and more. Our Family Literacy Program offers workshops for students who are parents or caregivers (grandparents or other) of young children. Workshops explain the U.S. school system, so they are prepared for parent-teacher conferences, can help their children with homework and navigate school websites. We encourage parents to understand the value of reading to their children. Supporting the educational and skill achievement of both parents and children improves economic opportunities for the entire family. Citizenship classes follow a specialized curriculum focused on the language skills and content knowledge required to succeed in the interview and pass the exam for naturalization as a U.S. citizen. Many students cannot read or write in their native languages, having never had the opportunity to attend school due to thing like war, natural disasters or cultural restrictions. Our Literacy Program offers three class levels designed to meet the needs of these learners who are so happy to attend school for the first time.
