Mission Statement

In a fun, supportive environment, Lovelane provides high-quality therapeutic horseback riding to achieve occupational, physical, speech, cognitive and other therapeutic gains, focusing on children with special needs. Our Vision: Lovelane focuses on children with special needs to enhance their lives and the lives of their families by providing life-long benefits, primarily through innovative therapeutic horseback riding.

About This Cause

Lovelane is a therapeutic horseback riding program that has a dramatic impact on the physical and cognitive development of children with special needs. Since 1988, Lovelane has been committed to providing an individualized program for children with special needs that integrates the pure joy and freedom of riding a horse with the appropriate therapy to achieve the child’s specific therapeutic goals. In 1992 Lovelane was incorporated as a non-profit and grew to become one of the most respected therapeutic riding programs in the area. A successful capital campaign in 2004 enabled the program to move into a permanent home designed exclusively for the special needs population. The facility includes indoor and outdoor arenas, a therapy room, office space, horse stalls and access to outdoor trails. The program more than doubled in size enabling more children to receive services. Today, the program is a testament to the dedication of the Lovelane families and supporters and the hard work of the children whose lives are so impacted by the therapy they receive. Currently, Lovelane provides services to 130 students a week with the help of nearly 200 volunteers. Lovelane’s Therapeutic Program includes 100 lessons with children whose primary diagnoses include, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, genetic disorders, autism spectrum disorders, hearing and vision impairments, spinal cord injuries, seizure and other neurological disorders as well as a range of developmental delays. A licensed therapeutic riding instructor works closely with the family and other therapeutic and medical professionals to define specific clinical goals dependent on diagnosis. Most of the children served at Lovelane live in a world that focusses on all that they cannot do, at Lovelane, our staff assumes success and our students receive a resounding message of “Yes, you can!” Lovelane does not replace other therapies, but is instead an integral component of the child’s overall treatment plan. As our population tends to have multiple therapies, Lovelane integrates the whole child into the goals and objectives. In addition to therapeutic riding lessons, Lovelane offers other enrichment programs throughout the year: Barn Buddies Program, Summer & Vacation Horsemanship Workshops, Recreational Riding Lessons. Additional information about these programs can be found below. Barn Buddies is a dynamic 12 week off-the-horse program where children, in a motivating supportive environment, learn about horses and horse care. Challenging and fun, Barn Buddies places students in integrated small groups comprised of children with and without special needs ages 5 and up. Guided by a licensed Riding Instructor and enthusiastic volunteers, children work as a team to take care of Lovelane’s wonderful horses. Through exciting games, activities and barn chores, Barn Buddies promotes the physical, emotional, and social growth of each child. Lovelane offers therapeutic and recreational horseback riding workshops during April and summer vacations. These workshops are a comprehensive 3 or 5 day experience where children get a chance to ride horses, have fun around the barn and stay active over the school break. In addition to riding, activities include: grooming and tacking, basic horse care, horse education, arts and crafts, games, and other fun horse experiences! Lovelane Horsemanship Workshops can accommodate 4 – 6 participants ages 4 years and up. Some workshops cater to children without special needs and others are integrated, comprised of children with and without special needs. Workshops are led by a licensed riding instructor who is assisted by volunteers, ensuring that each child gets an individualized experience. Space is limited so they are filled on a first come, first served basis. Payment is due with registration and secures your child’s enrollment in the program. Lovelane offers a small number of recreational (non-therapeutic) riding lessons specifically catered to Lovelane volunteers, families, and friends. Riders must be 7 years or older to participate. Lessons are held Fridays 2:00 – 6:00 and Sundays 12:30 – 5:00 from September – June. All lessons are on the flat (no jumping) and are primarily walk/trot only.
