Mission Statement
The Humanist Hub is a community organization providing counseling, community support, educational programming, life cycle ceremonies and other services to nonreligious people, both at Harvard University and in the greater Boston community and beyond.
About This Cause
The Humanist Hub is a place to connect with other people, act to make the world better, and evolve as a human being. We are a center for humanist life — a nonreligious community committed to the power of connection to help people do good and live well. We empower members to use reason and dialogue to determine their highest ethical values, to act on those values with love and compassion, and to help one another evolve as individuals, while working to improve the world. Founded in 1974 as the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard, we were a small organization serving Humanists, atheists, and agnostics at and around the University for over 30 years. In recent years we have evolved into a hub for community programs in Greater Boston and beyond. Our current programs serve humanists and those unaffiliated with any religious tradition or community, as well as religious allies. As recent social science research has affirmed, community participation and service is one of the most important factors contributing to physical and mental health. While traditional American religious congregations have been responsible for aggregating the majority of community participation in this country in past generations, in the 21st century congregational participation is declining dramatically and alternatives are needed. The Humanist Hub has become a laboratory for the design of such alternative community structures, at which people of many beliefs, ages and backgrounds regularly gather: to jointly explore questions of ethics and meaning; to serve others such as by packing meals for food-insecure families and working for racial and environmental justice; and to encourage personal growth and wellness through meditation and mindfulness seminars, and more.
