Mission Statement
Hearth is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the elimination of homelessness among the elderly. This mission is accomplished through a unique blend of prevention, placement, and housing programs all designed to help elders find and succeed in homes of their own. To this end, all housing operated by Hearth provides a creative array of supportive services that assist residents to age with dignity, regardless of their special medical, mental health, or social needs. Hearth believes these goals are best accomplished through respect for elders and staff, with the desire to see both achieve their highest degree of potential.
About This Cause
Founded by seven women as The Committee to End Elder Homelessness in 1991, Hearth, Inc. works to eliminate elder homelessness through a unique blend of prevention, placement, and the provision of affordable housing. Hearth’s founders identified that elders were a fast-growing percentage of the local homeless population but lacked supports tailored to their specific needs; they envisioned a world where elders would be cherished, nurtured, and able to live out their lives with dignity and grace. They put that vision into motion with the purchase of a single nine-unit property in Jamaica Plain, transforming a charming Victorian house into a supportive congregate living setting for nine formerly-homeless elder women. Three decades later, Hearth has evolved into a premier provider of elder-specific service-enriched permanent housing, with a total of 228 affordable units across seven Greater Boston properties, including 43 units of assisted living in Roxbury. In addition to the provision of safe, affordable homes, Hearth delivers a holistic approach to care with a collaborative onsite team that includes nurses, social workers, and certified home health aides. Our guiding ethos is to provide the tools necessary for older adults to age with dignity; while we offer guidance and access points to supportive services, we ensure that residents have the agency to determine what resources, activities, and supports fit their individualized self-care goals. Hearth also deploys an Outreach team dedicated to serving unsheltered or at-risk individuals aged 50 and over with housing placement and tenancy preservation services. Outreach works directly with community stakeholders to identify vulnerable residents and assist them in clearing high barriers to housing stability. Case managers meet these residents wherever they are, whether in emergency shelter or on the street, delivering critical supports and connection points to healthcare and social service providers.
