Mission Statement

World Unity Inc. seeks to promote equality, diversity and inclusion by raising self-awareness through the Sun poem and empowering individuals through the arts, education and innovative ideas. The Sun poem begins with a question - Are you greater than the sun/that shines on everyone: Black, Brown, Yellow, Red and White/ the sun does not discriminate (c) 1985 Sara Ting

About This Cause

The Sun poem inspired the founding of World Unity Inc. in 1994 and our initiatives. Laws and policies cannot remove prejudice and biases from a person's heart or stop a person from hating someone who is different. Dr. King recognized we can pass all the laws we want, we cannot legislate the heart. Einstein said, "You cannot solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it. You must stand on a higher ground. The Sun poem speaks to the heart and mind. Stories have been shared with us how the poem changed individuals. It has taught open mindedness, humility, forgiveness and empowered individuals to value themselves when other people diminished them. These are the qualities we all need to cultivate to embrace diversity and inclusion. The poem can help us see the common humanity that we all share. Therefore, World Unity Inc. has been committed to these initiatives: 1) The Sun poem is the heart of a TED Talk, we are promoting this as an educational resource tool for organizations to utilize especially educational institutions and healthcare organizations because in 2020 the American Public Health Association reported 145 cities and counties across 27 states declared racism a public health crisis. Comments from viewers: •“Remarkable talk Sara! I loved it. It really touches the heart of a listener. Great organization of your message and a call to action in the end--it was concise and engaging.” Shweta Patakkode, Healthcare professional •“I have viewed your video on YouTube – so inspirational, concise and brilliant.” Angela Dixon, Senior Vice President, Chief Diversity Officer, Berkshire Bank •“A great talk! Very encouraging!” Catherine Stavrakas, CAGS, School Psychologist •“The Sun Poem encourages us to pause and think about our interconnectedness as humans. The poem is beautifully non-judgmental while focusing on societal complexities. The Sun Poem is a fantastic trigger for deep discussions and social action.” Larry G. Dunham, D.M.D., F.A.C.D., F.I.C.D. Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Boston •“Very inspiring talk,” Sara!! Vince DiPofi, President of SSOE •“I am a healthcare professional currently working at Massachusetts General Hospital. When I watched your TED talk I had to pause. It spoke to me, you made me think as a person what I could do to be a better healthcare professional, which would improve health disparities. Further, it made me realize what is missing. The powerful quote of being unwanted by Mother Teresa, made me think about how a simple look can make a person feel unwanted. This is something that all healthcare professionals need to be aware of and this TED talk could dramatically improve patient care. Liza Parab- Clinical Research Coordinator in Anesthesia at MGH •"That was an amazing Ted Talk!!! So very cool and definitely what everyone could use to hear." Laurie Tarr Ellsworth; Artist / Landscape Architect You can see the TED Talk at: worldunityinc.org 2) Advocate for the building of the first landmark in the world promoting equality by showcasing the Sun poem. This will anchor the truth of equality to enlighten, empower and inspire future generations. We have a Statue of Liberty expressing freedom, however can an individual truly experience if the person experiences prejudice and bias? Equality is the heart of liberty and freedom. 3) Plant the seeds of equality through the program, Singing Equality across America and around the World. Free program available on line, music sheets and backtracks. Students learn the song and the meaning of the words and now have a tool to value themselves and each other. See a video of 800 children singing the song and performing the verse in sign language: http://worldunityinc.org/assets/files/We_all_See_the_Stars_v4.mp4 4) Promote equality, diversity and inclusion with a PSA of the Sun poem presented to radio and TV stations, billboards, social media, and digital platforms of schools, and organizations. It will cultivate a mindset of valuing diversity and inclusion. When was the last time you saw a PSA that addressed all forms of discrimination in a transformative way? See a PSA that aired on CBS Network TV :http://worldunityinc.org/assets/video/psavideo2012.mp4 5) World Unity Inc.'s 5 Minute Leadership Dialogue. Listen to how a leader answered this question: All humans have unconscious biases, what are you doing to overcome your unconscious biases? How would you answer it? You might discover you have the mind and heart of a leader: http://www.worldunityinc.org/project-4.html
