Mission Statement

The WBF advances social and economic justice by providing low-income individuals, primarily women, facing critical legal issues with access to justice by providing free legal representation. The WBF recruits and trains volunteer attorneys to address legal issues that disproportionately affect low-income women and their children. We create a community committed to providing free legal assistance to low-income individuals and their families, by recruiting, training and mentoring volunteer attorneys to provide excellent legal assistance, empowering their clients in the process.

About This Cause

The Women’s Bar Foundation relies on the expertise of volunteer attorneys to resolve unmet legal needs of low-income women and elders. Our programs mobilize and train volunteer attorneys to serve low-income clients through three pro bono programs. The Family Law Project for Domestic Abuse Survivors (FLP) creates a successful legal path out of abuse and poverty. The Elder Law Project (ELP) attorneys advise elders on essential legal planning and prepare documents such as wills, healthcare proxies and powers of attorney to help provide them clarity and options for self-determination and dignity. The Women’s Prison and Reentry Project (WPRP) educates incarcerated women about legal issues of importance to them, typically in family law and employment law. In addition, we provide free legal assistance to incarcerated women on their clemency petitions. We provide a critical, gap-filling service within the Massachusetts legal services sector as the one of the only organizations that serves clients with incomes up to 250% of the federal poverty guidelines. We serve individuals on the edge of poverty who cannot afford an attorney, but for whom an unaddressed legal issue could have devastating consequences. We are one of the only organizations that serves survivors of domestic abuse who are childless or are the noncustodial parent of a minor child. We are one of a few organizations that provide legal support to undocumented individuals. Our partnership with the private bar also plays an active role in developing the talent of the Commonwealth’s newest attorneys. We offers free, comprehensive subject matter training to volunteer attorneys, then pairs the volunteer with a highly experienced attorney who provides mentoring throughout the duration of the representation. This innovative pairing of mentors with volunteer attorneys sets our program apart, and helps us to recruit new attorneys and those who practice outside family law. We are seeking significant investments to scale our operations to serve additional clients. Charitable investments will allow: further development and integration of call logs, client intake, evaluation and case information into our existing database; additional development of sponsor/donor tracking and reporting tools; and study and implementation of new approaches for training and retaining volunteer attorneys.
