Mission Statement
PRI's mission is to empower residents and young people by building capacity of resident-based organizations and youth groups while supporting their organizing and civic activities. PRI promotes resident and youth leadership development and neighborhood stabilization through organizing, action, advocacy, and coalition building. PRI's philosophy is based on the concept: "neighborhood stabilization is the most effective anti-crime activity." PRI's vision of social change is when Grove Hall is stable and healthy and no longer impacted by barriers of racial disparities that limit access to services and opportunities. Our plans for the coming year include continuing with our outreach and organizing initiatives, while increasing our emphasis on engaging youth in positive activities with a special focus on young female teenagers, addressing the racial and economic disparities facing our young people and families, and education advocacy by parents and students.
About This Cause
Project RIGHT, Inc.’s (PRI) overall goals are to improve the actual safety and well being in the Grove Hall (City of Boston) neighborhood and to increase the number of young people engaged in positive opportunities which will lead to a decrease in negative behaviors. We have implemented a trauma training program so that young people and residents can better understand the traumatic impact violence has upon individuals, families and the community, and learn about dealing with the trauma and the resources available for that. By increasing their resiliency and capacity in addressing trauma, in turn, leads to a decrease in violence among young people. We have also initiated programming focused on middle and high school female students that covers both street and domestic violence prevention for them, improve their self esteem, learn about health issues that women in the Grove Hall community face, and help these female teenagers become more civically engaged. In combination, all of our new programming efforts this year are targeted to help increase opportunities and access to resources for young people, decrease violence in the community and improve the quality of life in our community. In addition to our various organizing campaigns targeting public safety, substance abuse prevention and other quality of life issues, PRI supports projects organized by youth and adult volunteers in the Grove Hall neighborhood, such as Mike’s and Al’s Basketball League Program, a co-ed flag football league, dodgeball, paint nights, community service and the Grove Hall Gay, Lesbian and Straight Alliance. These projects provide a viable diversion and alternative for Grove Hall teenagers from being pulled into negative street activities. It also allows them to maximize their potential by providing them access to opportunities and resources. PRI organizes group discussions, workshops and trainings for young people and residents to engage them in a variety of issues and provide opportunities to take action in tackling these problems. PRI’s plans for the upcoming year include continuing with these projects and increasing our emphasis on expanding outreach and participation in civic engagement, public safety, strengthening our alternative programs for youth, improving the character of the neighborhood, and advocacy for expanding job opportunities and education. These activities are designed to support young people and their families, provide positive avenues to address the impact trauma and stress violence may have had upon their lives. PRI’s SELF (Self Esteem Lasts Forever) project, will expand its number of participants and continue to focus on: helping female teenagers find their voices; teaching them to advocate for themselves; helping them avoid street/ domestic/dating violence situations; helping them cope with trauma; increasing their self esteem; increasing their knowledge about healthy eating and health issues that are prevalent in the community; and generally empowering them and helping them become advocates for themselves as well as for the community. Your donation will allow PRI to expand outreach and increase the number of young females to become involved in our efforts to reduce violence and improve the livability in Grove Hall. PRI is also the fiscal conduit for the Hands to Heart Center. Hands to Heart Center - Yoga for the People is a non-profit yoga service organization that provides free yoga classes to people living with poverty and trauma in Boston. HTHC connects trained yoga teachers with opportunities to volunteer in low-income, under-resourced neighborhoods of Boston. A growing body of evidence shows that yoga is effective in alleviating anxiety, depression, stress and trauma. Yoga improves physical health and wellness and builds resilience. However, yoga classes are expensive and there are no yoga studios in low-income communities.
