Mission Statement
Breakthrough Greater Boston is transforming urban education by inspiring excitement for learning, creating paths to college, and inspiring the next generation of urban teachers.
About This Cause
Breakthrough Greater Boston (BTGB) improves educational equity by inspiring excitement for learning, creating paths to college, and promoting careers in education. BTGB is a unique organization with a dual mission to 1) prepare low-income students for success in college and 2) train college students to become the next generation of urban teachers. BTGB’s Middle School Program is a rigorous year-round academic program with an intensive six-week Summer Program, a weekly After School Program, additional tutoring, and consistent advocacy with teachers and families. BTGB’s High School Program ensures that each student gains admittance to college through year-round advocacy, a ladder of summer opportunities, and a highly personalized College Access Program. Breakthrough also trains the next generation of teachers. BTGB’s Teacher Training Program trains high-achieving college students to shoulder the responsibilities of full-time teachers in our Summer Program and After School Program, with guidance from professional educators. BTGB is dedicated to developing the whole child and ensures students experience a nurturing environment that continuously supports their social emotional learning (SEL) throughout all of our programming. Building on 20 years of success in Cambridge, BTGB opened the Boston Campus in 2013 and Somerville Campus in 2018. Fully enrolled, we will serve 900 students and 200 teachers annually in three cities. Beginning in 2018, Breakthrough also offers College Transition and Success programming to alumni. Since our founding in 1992 by MacArthur Genius Awardee Dr. Angela Duckworth, BTGB has served over 2,500 students and teachers. Over the past eight years, 94% of our graduating seniors have been admitted to college. 82% are persisting, on track to far exceed the national college graduation rate of 14% for low-income students.
