About This Cause

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is the largest safety net hospital and busiest trauma and emergency services center in New England. Unwavering in its commitment to serve the community, Boston Medical Center is dedicated to providing accessible health care. Approximately 75 percent of our patients are among the underserved such as those with low-income status, people who are homeless, children in poverty and the elderly. BMC’s exceptional medical care is enhanced by our patient programs. Helping people overcome some of the barriers to better health and stability, BMC helps feed families, promotes safety and security for children (sponsored car seats, highchairs, a child protection team), access to legal assistance and a multitude of social services designed to aid individuals and families who need support. These programs are funded by philanthropy from friends in the community who recognize the unique role BMC plays in keeping the people of Boston strong and healthy. Opportunities for program support include: • The Grow Clinic: A program for children diagnosed with failure to thrive syndrome. In 2014, this specialty medical team provided more than 1,000 clinic visits to malnourished children, and evaluated more than 200 new referrals. Approximately 80 percent of Grow Clinic families live at or below the federal poverty line and 77 percent receive Medicaid and/or SSI benefits. • The Preventive Food Pantry: An initiative serving approximately 7,000 people per month, providing healthy meals for individuals and families as prescribed by their BMC physician. BMC does not want its patients to have to make the choice between paying their utility bills verses putting healthy meals on the table. • The Comprehensive Care Program: One of only a handful of programs in the nation dedicated to serving children with complex medical issues. The children receiving care in this clinic are among the most medically fragile, and suffer a host of genetic defects and disabilities. This is a pioneering program, demonstrating how we can improved health care outcomes and lower overall health care costs for children with medical complexity with the right approach. • Violence Intervention and Child Witness programs: Intervention and counseling programs aimed at breaking the cycle of violence. Working with patients who come through BMC’s emergency department as well as their children and families, Boston Medical Center is helping to reduce violent retaliations and empowering victims of, and witnesses to, violence in their homes and communities.
