GREATER BOSTON INTERFAITH ORGANIZATION

Boston, Massachusetts, 02199 United States

Mission Statement

The Greater Boston Interfaith Organization (GBIO) is a broad-based organization that works to coalesce, train, and organize the communities of Greater Boston across religious, racial, ethnic, class, and neighborhood lines for the public good. Our primary goal is to develop local leadership and organized power to fight for social justice. We strive to hold both public and private power holders accountable for their public responsibilities, as well as to initiate actions and programs of our own to solve community and economic problems.

About This Cause

Recent accomplishments: GBIO’s involvement in housing advocacy helped position public housing as a core priority of the Healey Administration and state lawmakers: * Governor Healey’s landmark housing bond bill known as the Affordable Homes Act was passed, authorizing $2.2 billion over five years to reverse chronic disrepair in state public housing. This was a massive increase over the $600 million approved previously. * Our efforts led to a $25 million increase for the public housing annual budget, up from Governor Healey’s original proposal of $92 million in 2023. * GBIO leaders were prominent voices leading to the passage of MBTA Communities Act-compliant zoning reform in Arlington, Brookline, Belmont, and Lexington, paving the way for new multi-family housing projects. GBIO is comprised of 61 dues-paying organizations, including churches, mosques, synagogues, unions, and community groups.
