Mission Statement

Founded in 1998, Chameleon Arts Ensemble’s mission is to present the highest quality chamber music performances, to foster an understanding and appreciation of the art form through imaginative and adventurous programs, and to infuse a public-spirited sensibility in all that we do to make classical music available, understandable, and accessible for audiences throughout the Boston area.

About This Cause

Founded in 1998, Chameleon Arts Ensemble has distinguished itself as one of Boston’s finest, most versatile chamber ensembles. Chameleon and Artistic Director Deborah Boldin have earned unqualified praise for integrating old and new repertoire into unexpected chamber music programs that are themselves works of art. They were recognized nationally with 2009 and 2007 Awards for Adventurous Programming from Chamber Music America and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. The Boston Globe praised Ms. Boldin’s “discerning ears and cosmopolitan tastes,” noted “planning a good chamber music program is an art unto itself, and few in town have mastered it as persuasively” and remarked, “During intermission, concertgoers could be overheard marveling at the program's breadth and wondering why other groups aren't as adventurous. Chameleon makes daring seem easy.” Chameleon’s programs lie in two main areas: the annual chamber music and recital series, and the outreach program Chameleons in the Community. Chameleon's Chamber Music Series runs from September through May. The 2014-2015 series will include 10 performances; three at the Goethe-Institut on Beacon Street and seven at First Church on Marlborough Street in Boston’s Back Bay. Our new recital series, Chameleon Up Close, includes two performances in March and April of 2015 at the Goethe-Institut, transformed into a cabaret-style setting. Both locations are wheelchair-accessible and provide audiences with the most intimate, “up close and personal” concert experience in Boston. All of the concerts feature our critically acclaimed mix of standard, neglected and contemporary music tied together by unique thematic concepts (highlighted by poetic concert titles) that provide the framework to make all the music understandable and relatable. We aim to show connections rather than differences and create diverse, balanced programs of music that are satisfying and enriching on every level. Chameleons in the Community has been an integral part of our work and our mission since the Ensemble's inception. It is borne out of a belief that access to music should not be a “luxury” item, and through it we give everything we do a sense of social responsibility. The program serves an urban, economically disadvantaged population with the goal of increasing the accessibility of classical music and creating connections between the arts and everyday life. Annually, it includes: a free ticket program; a benefit concert drive to raise books, food, clothing or other items for a local public service agency; and our spring music education program including a free family concert and instrument demonstrations, education concerts, and workshops for students from the Boston Public Schools.
