Mission Statement
The National Lawyers Guild ("NLG") was founded in 1937 as the first racially integrated bar association whose members - lawyers, law students, and legal workers - work together as a legal, political and social force for progressive changes. The NLG embraces the principle that “human rights are more sacred than property interests.” With 300 members, the Massachusetts Chapter, incorporated in 1969, is one of the most active in the country. Through projects and committees, we provide legal education, legal representation, litigation, and legal advice to the poor, disfranchised, immigrants, workers, and anyone who suffers as a result of systemic injustice.
About This Cause
The National Lawyers Guild-Massachusetts Chapter was re-established in 1969 as a progressive legal bar association. Its Street Law Clinic project offers legal workshops on Know Your Rights to the youth, communities of color, immigrants, and activists. Its Mass Defense Committee provides legal advice representation to community organizers and activists, and its Litigation Committee engages in impact litigation on behalf of those who are impacted by racism, sexism, homophobia, discrimination, and injustice.
