Mission Statement
Founded in 1862 as the New England Hospital for Women and Children, The Dimock Center is nationally recognized as a model for the integrated delivery of comprehensive health and human services in an urban community. Dimock’s programs include: Health Services (adult and pediatric medicine, eye and dental care, HIV/AIDS services), Child and Family Services (Head Start, Early Head Start, early intervention and adult education), Behavioral Health Services (inpatient, residential and outpatient substance use treatment and recovery services, family shelter and community residential programs for dually-diagnosed parents and their children and adults with development disabilities). The Dimock Center is committed to providing access to care for community members from very low-incomes. Dimock’s holistic view of care ensures that our patients and clients’ physical, psychological and educational needs are met.
About This Cause
Background and History • The Dimock Center’s mission is to heal and uplift individuals, families and our community. Our vision is to redefine the model of a healthy community through equitable access to comprehensive health care and education. • Dimock was founded as the New England Hospital for Women and Children in 1862 by Dr. Marie Zakrzewska. It was the first hospital in New England opened and operated by women for women, and only the second such hospital in the country. Our namesake, Dr. Susan Dimock, was our first attending surgeon. • In 1969, in response to our community’s needs, we became the Dimock Community Health Center, a minority-directed and community-based health center. • Situated on a nine-acre site that includes nine buildings constructed over a fifty-eight year period (from 1872 to 1930), The Dimock Center campus was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, designated as a National Landmark in 1991, and selected as a Boston Historical Landmark in 1995. A Model of Comprehensive, Integrated Care • The Dimock Center annually provides more than 18,000 underserved residents of Boston and other communities with access to high quality, low cost health care and human services. • We primarily serve low-income residents of Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan and Jamaica Plain, including a large immigrant population. Our substance use treatment programs serve men and women from more than 212 zip codes in the state, in response to the continuing opioid epidemic. • We are the second-largest health center in Boston and the largest employer in Roxbury. Service Areas • Our integrated model of care ensures that our families’ physical, psychological and educational needs are met. The Dimock Center includes three service divisions: o Health Services: adult, OB-GYN and pediatric medicine, eye and dental care, HIV/AIDS services o Child and Family Services : Head Start, Early Head Start, community childcare, early intervention, home-based visiting, and adult education o Behavioral Health Services: inpatient, residential and outpatient substance use treatment and recovery services, family shelter, and community residential programs for adults with development disabilities. Behavioral health services are fully integrated into our adult, OB-GYN and pediatric clinics. o In March 2018, we will open the Dr. Lucy Sewall Center for Acute Treatment Services, increasing our capacity to provide inpatient detoxification to 1,000 more men and women, for a total of 4,000 annually. Our significant Building the Road to Recovery capital campaign supported this critical project.
