Mission Statement
Medical Missions for Children (MMFC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Woburn, Massachusetts. MMFC is committed to the care of children, newborn through age seventeen (17) with severe congenital deformities and developmental disabilities. For 25 years, MMFC has conducted close to twenty missions a year and has operated for free on over 35,000 children. MMFC’s provides free medical services to developmentally-disabled children by dispatching teams of surgeons, anesthesiologists, dentists, nurses, speech pathologists and nutritionists to the most remote and underprivileged communities in the world to treat children with developmental deformities to include: congenital cleft lip, cleft palate and microtia (absence of one or both ears), and other severe facial deformities. The corresponding treatments include: surgical treatment of the congenital deformities; medical and surgical treatment of associated growth, learning, nutritional and speech disabilities. As well as, the treatment of hearing and language impairment. Additionally, we provide nutritional counseling, dental care, and speech therapy. Last year alone, MMFC launched close to 20 surgical and dental missions. Overall, the need is staggering with an estimated 170,000 children born with cleft lip and palate deformities each year and a backlog of more than one million children and adults awaiting this surgery worldwide. Congenital facial deformities severely affect quality of life; yet require a simple surgery to fix. MMFC is able to directly reach children who do not have access to high-quality healthcare and could not afford it even if they did. We primarily focus on reaching children at a young age to optimize their chances of having a “normal” childhood. MMFC has developed expertise which we bring to harder-to-reach areas that possess little existing healthcare infrastructure. By addressing this issue with the most cutting edge solutions, we are not only helping these children through surgery, but also transferring knowledge and skills to the areas we serve.
About This Cause
MMFC's free medical services and treatment are provided by cleft, craniofacial, microtia and thyroid teams. Our cleft, craniofacial, microtia and thyroid teams provide a coordinated approach to primary and pediatric surgical care for children with severe congenital deformities and developmental disabilities. Our teams consist of experienced and qualified physicians, nurses, speech pathologists and health care providers from different specialties. More importantly, we add Residents to all of our trips so that we can train the next generation of surgeons, while introducing them to the world of community of medical service. What differentiates us from other organizations is that we are not paid. We are 100% volunteer-based. Our approach is to physically bring our expertise and knowledge to these underserved areas and spread that wealth so that we can create a self-sustaining model. Some of the countries we serve on a yearly basis are China, Ecuador, Guatemala, India, Peru, Tanzania, Rwanda, and the Philippines.
