Mission Statement
To create positive experiences in the lives of children with heart disease and their families.
About This Cause
Kids Meet...Scars Blend...Wonders Happen!!! The mission of Camp Taylor is to provide an environment that allows an opportunity for pediatric heart patients to shed the emotional, mental, and psycho-social challenges that they face every day by creating positive experiences in their lives through offerings of educational and self-esteem building medically supervised camp programs. Peer support, mentoring and recreational activities promote mental and social wellness as children and families with similar life experiences come together and experience camp. Camp Taylor offers several programs for children & young adults with heart disease and their families. Our flagship program is our well-known medically supervised youth & teen residential summer camp sessions. We offer 8 camp sessions catering to the under-served population of pediatric cardiology. In the world of Camp Taylor, fun tackles fears, friendships bloom fast and scars are badges of honor. Sharing emotional, mental & social challenges that each person faces in life comes naturally at camp where our campers are surrounded by youth & families with similar life experiences. Shedding your shirt at the pool to swim finally "feels good" as almost everyone has a zipper scar. Campers enjoy swimming, canoeing & kayaking horseback riding, rock-wall climbing, skit night, archery, heart education, and much more while at camp. Campers return home from camp empowered with newfound confidence, freshly educated about their disease. Camaraderie and fun is the feeling of the week at camp. For many campers experiencing an environment where they actually "feel normal" is a priceless gift only found at camp. The program encourages the campers to move forward from their time with camp more focused on what they can achieve rather than the limitations of living with a medically fragile heart defect. The organization also increases regional awareness of the nation's #1 birth defect through media coverage, speaking engagements, school assemblies, and community fundraising events. Most of the families that the camp serves, endure financial hardships from numerous hospitalizations, medical copays, and parents taking time off work to be at their child's side during frequent illnesses so the programs remain free of charge to the families. Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) remains the leading birth defect in the world. Many children do not survive their childhood years. There is no cure for this disease. As medical advances make it possible for many children with CHD to survive, it becomes critical to ensure their emotional, psychosocial, and physical needs are met in order for them to grow into confident and successful youth.
