Mission Statement

Ice Axe Foundation connects the natural world with students to diversify the education of environmental sciences for today’s youth. Bridging a gap between the field and a standard classroom, Ice Axe Foundation harnesses real world expedition experience and technology to create awareness and enthusiasm for the advocation of the protection of our planet – bringing the mystery of places like the North and South Pole and the Amazon Rainforest into science, history, and economic curriculum across the country.

About This Cause

Doug Stoup, ICE AXE FOUNDATION founder and President, has been to the North and South Pole more times than anyone on the planet. He is an incredibly skilled and experienced expedition leader and senior field guide with over twenty years of active expedition experience. Doug is a committed environmentalist, activist, educator, and advocate constantly looking and working toward new ways to raise awareness for the issues of climate change and the protection of the natural world. The ICE AXE FOUNDATION originated from many conversations Doug had with educators about how to harness the fascinating mystery and awe of Doug’s journeys and exploration into a tool to get students excited about environmental science. Doug began to envision how to bring the expedition into the classroom—through classroom visits and satellite internet technology. He created the Explorer Lecture Series and Ice Axe Impact School and began linking his expeditions to the North and South Pole with the schools and educators by live feeds using satellite technology that he helped design and pioneer. While some of this technology may now seem almost commonplace, from the remote places he visits, it is still cutting edge and inspiring for students. The program has grown from its original locations of the North and South Poles to include the Antarctic Peninsula, the Brazilian Amazon, and Greenland. Through these programs, Doug uses his explorations to explore the disciplines of botany, geology, geography, and the earth sciences. Students are supported in getting involved in environmental and conservation causes locally and globally, and the program opens the conversation of what it means to be a global citizen of this planet. The Explorer Lecture Series can be modified to be appropriate for audiences of all age groups. The presentation and live calls can also be adapted to fit an educator’s specific curriculum whether it is science, history, geography, climate sciences, journalism, or physical education. In addition, the curriculum can include outdoor survival tools and skills. The program consists of three elements: a school presentation, a live call from a remote destination on the planet, and an interactive website that allows students to track and follow the team during the expedition.
