Mission Statement

Mission: The Fitchburg Art Museum is a catalyst for learning, creativity, and community building. We accomplish this mission with art historical collections and exhibitions, special exhibitions of contemporary New England art, education programs, public art projects, community partnerships, and creative economy initiatives.

About This Cause

Founded in 1925, the Fitchburg Art Museum (FAM) is the leading cultural institution in North Central MA, dedicated to engaging audiences with exhibitions, education programs, and community partnerships. FAM is located in the diverse and economically-challenged city of Fitchburg, MA (pop. 40,000). Exhibitions feature collection strengths in photography, African Art and American Art, and rotating special exhibitions of New England contemporary art. Education programs include Learning Lounges (hands-on family-friendly education and art-making activity spaces); artist and curator talks; public and school group tours; art classes; workshops; and teacher training. FAM serves Fitchburg, Leominster, North Central MA, Southern NH, and beyond. FAM partners with area schools, colleges, community groups, and artist organizations and is a leader in efforts to stimulate the local creative economy. Over the last 3 years FAM has updated its physical plant, rejuvenated the museum’s exhibition and education programs, and launched initiatives to better serve the community. A new ambitious 5-year Strategic Plan to continue this work will rely on new outside funding for the exciting initiatives ahead.
