Mission Statement
The mission of Crossroads Rhode Island is to help those experiencing homelessness secure stable homes.
About This Cause
The vision of Crossroads Rhode Island is to ensure that every Rhode Islander has a safe and affordable place to call home. We have a diverse funding base and we manage our resources to ensure fiscal accountability and sustainability in a transparent manner. Crossroads is the employer of choice for highly skilled professionals in the field. We are seen as collaborators locally, regionally and nationally and are generously supported by an active and engaged community. Crossroads Rhode Island values are: 1. Safety – promoting a trauma-informed culture, free from physical and emotional harm that fosters empowerment, healing, and belonging. 2. Respect – Understanding the intrinsic worth and dignity of every person. 3. Effectiveness – Delivering services and managing the organization with equity, efficiency, innovation, and accountability. Established in 1894, Crossroads Rhode Island is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization governed by a 38-member volunteer Board of Directors with representation from the business, finance, health care, education, media and government sectors. Crossroads’ main facility, which is located at 160 Broad Street, Providence, RI, houses administrative offices, and on-site services include intake, assessment, emergency shelter services, day shelter, case management, basic needs assistance and permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless adults. Crossroads’ off-site locations include the Family Center at 754 Broad Street, which provides services, shelter and transitional and permanent housing to families; Kingstown Crossings Apartments in North Kingstown, RI, which provide supportive housing to formerly homeless families; and the Harold Lewis House, located in West Warwick, provides supportive housing for formerly homeless elders. As the homeless population has become more diverse, Crossroads has adapted and expanded its services to meet the needs of new groups experiencing homelessness, including unaccompanied women, families, children, couples, elders and LGBT adults. Today, Crossroads’ housing-focused, trauma-informed and client-centered services and programs serve, on average, 4,000 people annually. Through evidence-based best practices, a housing-first approach and coordinated entry using the Service Priority Decision Assistance Tool (SPDAT), we identify clients with the greatest needs for assistance and concentrate on helping those with highest acuity achieve secure stable housing and income. Our social services programs include 24-hour crisis intervention, emergency shelter, counseling, rapid re-housing, workforce education, financial literacy, permanent supportive housing for individuals and families, and home-based case management. Collaborative efforts include an onsite health clinic for homeless adults, which provides primary care, mental health and dental services; management of scattered-site permanent housing units; working with organizations that provide mental health programs; collaboration with public safety, corrections and human services organizations. Crossroads has a formal affiliation with the Women’s Center of RI to address the needs of clients escaping domestic violence.
