Mission Statement

The Potter League for Animals is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of animals. We promote the humane treatment of all animals and provide shelter and care for lost or unwanted companion animals,. Through community education and the fostering of relationships between people and animals, we enhance the animals' lives and enrich the human experience.

About This Cause

The Potter League was founded in 1929 and is considered Newport County's go-to animals care and education center. As an open admissions shelter, the Potter League takes in lost, abandoned and neglected animals and provides shelter, medical care, training and adoption services to provide each one with the second chance they so deserve. In the past year 171 lost animals were reunited with their owners and 1,575 animals were placed with new, loving families. All dogs, cats and rabbits are sterilized prior to adoption and up to date on all vaccinations and have undergone medical/behavior evaluations. If training is needed, our behavior and training team works with each animal to ensure a smooth transition into a new home. Our low cost spay neuter facility performed 5,552 sterilizations for animals belonging to the public and local rescue groups. Our humane education program has been in place for 28 years and offers classroom instruction in 12 schools in Newport County teaching responsible pet ownership and respect for all animals. The animals are cared for in a state-of-art LEED Gold facility and our board of directors, staff and volunteers work side-by-side to constantly look for ways to accomplish our strategic goals effectively and thoughtfully.
