Mission Statement
The mission of the Jonnycake Center of Westerly is to assist people through financial crisis situations by providing a continuum of services in cooperation with other agencies in our service area. We work with each individual to find a path out of dependency toward self-sufficiency.
About This Cause
The Jonnycake Center of Westerly provides basic-needs assistance to low- to moderate-income residents of Westerly, Charlestown, Richmond and Hopkinton, Rhode Island. Founded in 1975, the Jonnycake Center offers our neighbors a food pantry, emergency financial assistance, connections to community resources, and seasonal programs that help families remain sustainably in their homes. It also has a large and popular thrift store that not only raises funds for the mission, provides free clothing and household goods for clients, but also offers the community low-cost, high-quality items. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the Jonnycake Center of Westerly served 2,547 individuals. It distributed groceries equivalent to 203,868 meals, and provided $139,086 in financial assistance. The holiday program provided 1,051 meals between Thanksgiving and December, and provided gifts for 533 children. Volunteers provided 14,475 hours of labor. The goal is to determine the unique needs of each client and then provide the required assistance. When the Center cannot fulfill all of a client needs' the clients are referred to other agencies. The Center frequently collaborates with other local agencies, including a homeless shelter and a medical center. The Jonnycake Center of Westerly does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, citizenship, disability, or national origin.
