Mission Statement

Sojourner House is a comprehensive domestic and sexual violence agency. Everyday we provide programs and supportive services to victims of domestic and sexual violence, children who witness abuse, and the greater Rhode Island community.

About This Cause

The mission of Sojourner House is to promote healthy relationships by providing culturally sensitive support, advocacy, and education for victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence; and to effect systems change. Sojourner House is a comprehensive domestic and sexual violence agency that provides residential and supportive services to victims and survivors of abuse. We offer Rhode Island’s largest and most comprehensive residential services program for victims and survivors, including three safe shelters (one for women and children, one for men, and one for victims of human trafficking), transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, and rapid re-housing. In addition to safe housing, we provide supportive services, including one-on- one support and advocacy, support groups, financial literacy classes, bilingual advocacy, free HIV testing and sexual health advocacy, programs and services dedicated to individuals who identify as LGBTQ, case management, immigration advocacy, empowerment education, and programs for children who have witnessed abuse in their homes such as expressive arts classes and Camp Eureka, a free summer camp for children who witness domestic violence. Sojourner House also operates the only drop-in advocacy and resource center in the greater Providence area; offering victims and community members access to support and services when and where they need it most. Sojourner House was founded in 1976 by a group of concerned women in Rhode Island, consisting mostly of staff, students, and alumni from Brown University. Sojourner House was partly named after Sojourner Truth, the courageous 19th-century enslaved woman who later became an abolitionist, speaking on behalf of women and slaves as she traveled throughout the United States. Her message of strength and freedom inspires our work. Our goal is to give victims and survivors a place to "sojourn" as some go through the toughest times of their lives. We've designed our programs so that our clients have many options to choose from, allowing them to build strength and independence as they recover from abuse. All of our programs were created to ensure that families who are experiencing domestic or sexual violence have the support they need to rebuild their lives. We empower victims to become survivors, and our services are trauma-informed, so that we can meet victims where they are in their recovery journey.
