Mission Statement
Vision Statement - To have a suicide free Rhode Island. A Suicide Prevention Resource for Rhode Islanders - The Samaritans will be the “agency of choice” for individuals, families and other community stakeholders who seek information relating to suicide prevention, grief support, education and resources. Mission Statement - Within the belief that suicide is generally preventable, the mission of The Samaritans is to help reduce the incidents of suicide in Rhode Island through greater access to information and resources. To achieve this mission, The Samaritans recognizes that suicide prevention is a process involving many community resources. As an agency that is not a licensed health care facility, The Samaritans believes its role within the suicide prevention process works best when volunteers, those left behind by suicide and other volunteer and professional stakeholders step forward to: Work to eliminate the stigma associated with the topic of suicide prevention and grief support Provide access to information and resources Advocate for programs and services that enhance public awareness, peer to peer volunteerism and community service in direct support of those who are lonely, depressed, and suicidal or grieving the loss of someone by suicide and greater mental health services for everyone affected by suicide Embrace “befriending” and nonjudgmental listening as the means for communicating and connecting with those affected by suicide
About This Cause
YOUR SUPPORT MATTER! Since March 2020, when the impact of COVID-19 began, Rhode Islanders turned to The Samaritans as a trusted resource for pandemic-related suicide issues. With your donor support and the support of our COVID-19 Emergency Response Leadership Team and agency volunteers, we were able to quickly step up and create pathways to care. Please remember, because of charitable support, all volunteer supported programs listed below are offered free of charge to the public. THANK YOU! Since 1977, SAMSRI has trained more than trained more than 1,672 volunteers; hosted more than 1 million phone calls and received thousands of visitors to our website and Facebook pages from Rhode Island, all fifty states and more than 100 countries around the world. Our programs include: Crisis Hotline/Listening Line (est. 1977) - Through our Hotline/Listening Line, Rhode Islanders of all ages have access to our trained volunteer befrienders as well as assistance in identifying needed services. http://samaritansri.org/our-programs/hotline Safe Place Support Group (est. 1981) - The Samaritans provides RI’s oldest, continually operating, free bereavement support group exclusively for adults who have experienced death by suicide of a family member or friend. http://samaritansri.org/our-programs/safe-place Youth and Teen Education (est. 1986) - The Samaritans and the RI Department of Education are mandated by RI General Law to provide suicide prevention education training to students, teachers, administrators, as well as parents and caregivers. Due to lack of state funds, RI Department of Education only appropriates $6,500 and most funding is utilized for professional development. Our website has become our most utilized youth and teen suicide prevention resource with more than 36,150 visitors in 2019. http://samaritansri.org/youth-resources Outreach and Community Education – (est. 1977) As the state's most trusted name in suicide prevention, The Samaritans is in a unique position to increase awareness of issues relating to depression, suicide, treatment as well as the challenges facing caregivers and survivors of a loved one’s suicide. http://samaritansri.org/our-programs/community-outreach Three major programs under Community Education areas include: (1) Website (est. 2004) where in 2020, more than 18,806 visitors found international, national and local information and resources - www.samaritansri.org (2) LifeLine "peer to peer" (created 1989 and re-established in 2011) prison befriending program taking place at the RI Adult Correctional Institution's Men's Intake Center.
