Mission Statement
Day One’s mission is to reduce the prevalence of sexual abuse and violence and to support and advocate for those affected by it. We do this through leadership and action that is responsive to the needs of the community. Advocating for public policy initiatives and systemic changes that positively impact how Rhode Island handles sexual abuse/assault cases, Day One also utilizes innovative and effective approaches in addressing the mental health and advocacy needs of child and adult victims and their families. We provide treatment, intervention, education, advocacy, and prevention services to Rhode Islanders of all ages—from preschool children to elder adults.
About This Cause
History Established in 1973, Day One is the only agency in Rhode Island organized specifically to deal with the issue of sexual violence as a community concern. From sexual assault on college campuses to the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC), Day One is addressing the issues that are affecting Rhode Island communities and leading the effort to provide real solutions for both victims and those at risk. Day One utilizes innovative and effective approaches in addressing the mental health and advocacy needs of child and adult victims and their families. While we serve all socioeconomic levels, the majority of our clients are low to moderate income. All of our Children’s Advocacy Center and adult advocacy services are provided free of charge. Day One offers counseling services on a sliding fee scale for clients who are under/uninsured. Without the clinical services that Day One provides free of charge, most clients without health insurance would not have access to treatment. Each year, we provide more than $150,000 in free care to children and adults. In 2016, we reached 9,063 individuals with our programming. We provide treatment, intervention, advocacy, education, and prevention services to Rhode Islanders of all ages—from preschool children to elder adults. We also advocate for public policy initiatives and systemic changes that positively affect how Rhode Island handles sexual abuse cases. Programs & Services Advocacy Services – Day One’s Advocacy Program provides victims of sexual assault with many services free of charge, including the agency’s 24-hour statewide Helpline; accompaniment for victims to hospital emergency rooms, police stations and courts during the judicial process; Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) services; and Day One’s partnership with the Office of Victims Services. In 2016, Day One’s advocacy programs served nearly 4,000 women, men and children. Children’s Advocacy Center – Since 1993, the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) has been providing evaluation, advocacy, and treatment services to child victims of sexual and/or physical abuse. The CAC has radically changed the way that cases of child sexual abuse are handled in our state, reducing the trauma to the child involved as well as creating stronger cases for prosecution. Prior to the establishment of the Rhode Island CAC, cases of child sexual abuse were handled separately by each agency involved (the Department of Children, Youth and Families; police; the Department of the Attorney General). Children were routinely interviewed numerous times by different people, an experience that many found frightening, confusing and traumatizing. As a result, children would often refuse to testify, prompting the family to drop the charges in order to put an end to the child's ordeal and to stop the re-victimization. Led by the CAC, Rhode Island now takes a multi-disciplinary approach to interviewing child victims of sexual violence. The child only tells of the abuse one time. The forensic interview is recorded to a DVD. The DVD is then used in testimony and has led to an increase in prosecution. In addition to providing evaluation and evidence gathering, the CAC also offers treatment. Onsite mental health services, including crisis intervention, assessments and on-going individual and group therapy, are available at Day One. The CAC served 316 children and families in 2016. Clinical Services – Day One provides professional counseling for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Children and adults receive crisis intervention, assessment, treatment (individual, group and family therapy), and referral services. Day One’s cutting-edge clinical services are evidence-based and include trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; Eye Movement Desensitization Rehabilitation; Internal Family Systems for people who dissociate (for complex trauma); Motivational Interviewing; and Attachment Regulation Competency. In 2016, Day One provided clinical services to 793 Rhode Islanders. Prevention Education – Day One's Prevention Education program is a vital component of our mission. Workshops help students of all ages (K-12 and university) to understand the root cause of sexual violence and how to prevent it. Our programs address a multitude of issues and are offered in a series of one- to six-session workshops. Workshops cover topics such as bullying and sexual harassment. Prevention strategies focus on promoting and encouraging healthy relationships and bystander intervention. Last year, 4,624 students participated in Day One education workshops.
