Mission Statement
House of Hope strives to prevent and end homelessness in Rhode Island by developing and applying innovative models that couple housing with client centered support services with the goal of keeping people housed.
About This Cause
House of Hope CDC has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1989. From the grass roots philosophies of a small neighborhood group of socially minded individuals, a shelter unlike any other was born. The organization was built on the premise of meeting people where they are, literally and figuratively, by providing safe and stable housing with client-centered services that empower and encourage each individual to reach their fullest potential. Since our beginning, House of Hope CDC has grown into a highly effective, outcome-oriented organization that today buys, builds, renovates and/or currently manages 18 properties. These include 116 shelter beds, 38 permanent supportive housing units, 6 home ownerships and 6 units that are in various stages of development. In 25 years of service to our community House of Hope CDC has been “home” for thousands of homeless adults and families with children. Today, House of Hope CDC is providing the following services: • Emergency Shelter/Harrington Hall (Cranston): night-to-night shelter for men offering intensive case management, shelter, meals, and basic needs. Last year we served 750 men in this 88-bed facility; since 2009 more than 230 men have moved into permanent housing or to other more stable situations, such as transitional shelter or residential treatment programs • Transitional Shelter (Warwick/Providence): community-based, short-term housing with a high level of case management on site; last year 55 men and women were served in these two 15-bed facilities; 25 moved to permanent housing and 2 entered residential treatment programs. • Permanent Supportive Housing (Warwick): affordable housing with case management on site or nearby. Last year 64 individuals were served in this program, which includes 8 families with 19 children; 3 families moved to independent housing and the remaining individuals maintained their housing and did not return to homelessness. • Housing Development (Cranston, Warwick, West Warwick, Pawtucket): We buy and renovate single and multi-family housing for individuals/families whose incomes are at or below 80% average median income. These formerly vacant/foreclosed properties provide affordable homeownerships and rentals. We have bought, renovated and sold 6 homes with one additional currently under construction. HOHCDC has acquired a historic property in Pawtuxet Village, which will become 10 units of permanent supportive housing for homeless adults with disabilities. House of Hope has successfully collaborated with both Opportunities Unlimited and the Kent Center to develop affordable housing for their clientele. All properties have been transferred back to the partnering agencies and are currently occupied. • Supported Employment: House of Hope Boutique is a social venture that provides employment opportunities and job training for clients who complete a 6-week sewing program and work in the store to gain retail skills. We have plans for expanded employment/training programs to include food preparation, security and laundry service for 2014. • Youth RAP: mentorship, academic support and recreational activities for youth residing in our programs.
