About This Cause

Comprehensive Community Action Inc. (CCAP), a private 501 © (3) non-profit agency established in 1965 as part of the War on Poverty, provides services and resources across southern Providence and Kent counties of RI, but many programs are also offered statewide. The agency provides a diverse array of services including four integrated health centers (primary care, dental, behavioral health/substance treatment), maternal child home visiting and WIC, workforce development, child abuse prevention, early care and education, and various social services including food, rental assistance, and other basic needs. Food is often the most basic need and service that consumers seek but our staff facilitate a comprehensive needs assessment with those consumers who then are also linked to additional services and resources. Of our 40,000+ consumers this year, 83% received more than one service. The number of individuals/families demonstrating food insecurity have continued to grow statewide and our food pantry has evidenced this need. According to the RI Standard of Need 2022 from the Economic Progress Institute, household earnings, especially with minority residents, have not kept up with the cost of inflation. The RI Community Food Bank’s 2022 Status Report on Hunger in Rhode Island also documents the growing costs of food inflation and subsequent food insecurity. While CCAP served 2,697 unduplicated individuals for food in 2021, that number grew to 3,504 individuals in 2022. From 2021 to 2022, CCAP’s minority food pantry consumers increased by 5%. Within those unduplicated counts, 26% were children 0-17 years of age, 13% were elders over age 65, and almost 1% of individuals were homeless. All met criteria for income falling below the federal poverty limit. Selected agency wide consumer data also includes: • 28% of adults reported less than a high school diploma/GED, 23% completed some college and/or earned a degree. • Only 27% of adult consumers reported either part/full time work with 12% of consumers reporting that they were retired. • An additional 7% of consumers reported a disability. We are in process of increasing our square footage for our food pantry and will utilize a refrigerated van for food distribution within rural areas; we continue to innovate to meet food insecurity. To that end, we developed/operate a seasonal garden to enhance fresh produce for our customers. However, we still need to write grants to fund the purchase of foods for our growing clientele. Food costs for the pantry are approximately $500/week. While we have received small grants various corporate foundations, these grants are not guaranteed nor yearly. Our food pantry/case management staff are supported by CSBG funding but in order to purchase food, even from our state's community food bank, we need to raise money; there is not additional funding specific to food purchases. We respectfully ask for assistance to feed those most in need; 100% of funding received will be used to purchase food items.
