Mission Statement

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra (HSO) is Connecticut’s premier music organization and the second largest orchestra in New England. Its mission is to perform music of the highest quality and to increase the understanding and enjoyment of that music by Connecticut audiences through its educational programming and community outreach. The HSO has been offering carefully designed educational programs for more than sixty years with the intention of engaging audiences through interactive and collaborative musical activities, enlivening audience members through the transformational experience of live music, and enriching the audience through a sequential path of music exploration.

About This Cause

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra has been providing the Greater Hartford community with music and music education programs since 1934 and serves more than 95,000 people each year. The HSO’s music programming includes nine Masterworks Concerts (27 performances), four POPS! concerts (5 performances) and Sunday Serenades (3 performances held at the Wadsworth Atheneum). The HSO, for 23 seasons has planned a summer series of five family-friendly, outdoor concerts entitled, Talcott Mountain Music Festival, held at the Simsbury Meadows Performing Arts Center in the Farmington Valley. New in the 2016-2017 season are Family Concerts, produced by the Music Education team and held in unique spaces such as the Connecticut Science Center and the Harriet Beecher Stowe House, and a series of Contemporary Music concerts with small HSO ensembles to be held at Real Art Ways. Each series of music concerts range from traditional classics to the most contemporary scores and original compositions. Concerts are structured with a wide variety of audiences in mind to ensure that everyone in the community can enjoy what the HSO offers. Most concerts are ticketed events, but many free performances are scheduled throughout the year in various venues and locations. The HSO Community Engagement and Education program focuses on delivering educationally-focused music performances to students in all grade levels throughout Connecticut. In 2016-2017 more than 14,000 students from 30 towns participated or were exposed to the full orchestra or small ensemble performances. Many programs are offered in the schools, and others are conducted at the HSO’s home venue at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. The HSO’s music education program is designed to help students overcome the obstacles to learning that are caused by poverty, lack of parental involvement, transient family life and language barriers – prevalent in many communities. The programs also fill a music education gap experienced by many schools. Unfortunately, in a challenging economic environment, arts and music education are often among the first areas to be reduced or eliminated from school budgets. The HSO deploys its musicians to deliver meaningful, enriching musical experiences with the intention that these arts experiences will help overcome obstacles to learning, and most connect to the classroom’s academic focus to support this critical efforts.
