Mission Statement
United Way of Greater New Haven is focused on changing the odds so that every child and family has the opportunity for a good life. We are bringing people together to create a thriving community for all of us: the kind of place where you want to live, to work, and to raise a family. To get there, we are focused on innovative solutions to the most pressing challenges in our community around Education, Income, Health and Basic Needs.
About This Cause
Real change requires people coming together who understand that everyone benefits when we provide economic opportunity, good education and basic needs for all our neighbors. That’s why another key part of our mission is engaging volunteers to help make a difference in peoples' lives. You can find out about volunteering here. United Way of Greater New Haven is an independent nonprofit organization, governed by a local volunteer Board of Directors. We are one of nearly 1,800 community-based United Ways in 45 countries and territories under the umbrella of United Way Worldwide. UWGNH was founded in 1919 as the Community Chest of Greater New Haven to provide grants to core nonprofit "safety net" agencies in the region. In recent years we have transformed to a "Community Impact" United Way, focused on change, not charity.
