Mission Statement

Womens League Child Development Center nurtures the holistic development of young children and prepares them to enter kindergarten as curious, creative, confident students who love learning and are equipped for success

About This Cause

The Women’s League Child Development Center (WLCDC) has been a vital part of the Hartford community, serving children and families, for over 100 years. Since the mid-20th century, early childhood education has been the focus of programs offered. Thirty years ago, WLCDC became the first inner-city early childhood education program to be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Today, as a recognized leader in the field of early childhood education, the Women’s League operates a child development center with 17 classrooms that serve over 200 infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children. The devoted group of African American ministers’ wives who established the Women’s League Child Development Center in 1917 to meet the needs of migrant and immigrant families in Hartford would be astonished and deservedly proud to know their legacy is a thriving and integral part of the capital city’s social and educational infrastructure in 2021. WLCDC also is organizationally strong and financially stable at this moment in its long history—a time when so many childcare and early education centers locally and across the country either are struggling or did not survive as a result of unprecedented disruptions and stresses associated with the coronavirus pandemic. During this crisis, WLCDC proved itself to be agile, adaptive, and innovative in its approach to addressing new challenges and mandates without compromising its high standards or core values.
