Mission Statement

The mission of the Artists Collective is to preserve and perpetuate the arts and culture of the African diaspora by providing training in the performing and visual arts, sponsoring special events, developing professional artists, fostering positive feelings of self-identity and raising public consciousness about the culture of peoples of African descent.

About This Cause

Founded in 1970 by NEA Jazz Master, Jackie McLean, the Artists Collective has more than 47 years' experience in providing performing and visual arts training to youth from Hartford and the Greater Hartford area. We recognize the need to provide Hartford youth with exposure to cultural arts and programs that provide them with inspiration and motivation; to reduce truancy and involvement with the juvenile justice system. Our programs help youth to gain the discipline and purpose needed to succeed in the arts and remain in school. We provide the Hartford community with cultural performances and events by presenting world-class artists at our theater. The Artists Collective presents a free-community concert annually, followed by the Music in the Atrium series, and the Jackie McLean Memorial Celebration.
