Mission Statement
She Leads Justice is a statewide, nonprofit organization that advocates for and empowers women and girls, especially those who are under-resourced or marginalized. SLJ works to create an equitable society where women and girls thrive.
About This Cause
Founded in 1973, as the Connecticut Women’s Education and Legal Fund (CWEALF), She Leads Justice is proud to be one of the oldest continuing women's rights organizations in the nation. Originally a women's rights law firm, SLJ launched in the wake of a successful lobbying effort that resulted in the passage of Connecticut's Equal Credit Act. From our work in the 1970’s on legal cases concerning equal pay, equal credit and sex discrimination, to working with our LGBTQ+ sisters and siblings to pass a co-parent adoption law in 2000 and marriage equality in 2008, to the recent 2019 passage of one of the strongest paid family and medical leave programs in the country – SLJ has always adapted, transformed, and explored new ways to serve the women and girls of Connecticut. SLJ accomplishes its mission through Legal Information and Access, Public Policy and Advocacy, and Advancement and Leadership Initiatives: Through LEGAL INFORMATION AND ACCESS, SLJ bridges the justice gap by empowering women with their legal rights and options, connecting them with resources, and providing individual support as they navigate the justice system. SLJ serves approximately 1,000-1,300 per year, most of whom are low-income women of color living in cities with at least one dependent. SLJ’s Legal Education Program works to guarantee equal access to legal, educational and social service systems. To do so, SLJ draws on a combination of strategies, including Information & Referral, Advocacy and Community Education. Information and Referral (I & R) is a unique service that provides information on family matters, equal education for women and girls, workplace issues and discrimination. SLJ’s I & R staff help clients navigate the systems involved in these cases by explaining the law in easy to understand terms. SLJ supplements this basic information service by providing referrals to attorneys and other service providers. Please call 860.524.0601 if you need legal information. Through PUBLIC POLICY AND ADVOCACY, CWEALF protects and promotes the rights of women and girls by identifying the challenges they face and elevating their interests and voices through public policy and advocacy. To advance women’s economic security in our state, SLJ leads policy coalitions, offers public testimony, and collaborates with community partners. We also look to our Legal Education program to help us understand the significant needs of women and girls throughout the state and to inform our legislative agenda. Through our ADVANCEMENT AND LEADERSHIP INITIATIVES, SLJ provides a platform for women’s voices and issues, and promotes advancement opportunities for women and girls to reach their potential in school, at work, in the home, and in the community. SLJ convenes the Connecticut Collective for Women and Girls, which is a collaborative of over 30 organizations committed to the advancement of women and girls, including those who are cisgender, transgender, and non-binary, in the state of Connecticut. The Collective is a network that brings participating organizations together to highlight and amplify their work while drawing on the collective power of collaboration and working together.
