Through all of our programs and services, we touch the lives of 8,000 individuals annually from throughout our region and state. We are the only domestic violence agency serving victims and their children from New Britain, Bristol, Southington, Kensington, Berlin, Plainville, Burlington, Plymouth and Terryville, CT.

About This Cause

Prudence Crandall Center (PCC) provides comprehensive services to adults and children affected by domestic violence, as well as prevention education and outreach to the community at large. Through all of our programs, our goal is to provide help and hope to victims in need and break cycles of violence for the benefit of this and future generations. Established in 1973, PCC is the oldest domestic violence program in Connecticut and the second oldest nationwide. In 1975, we opened the first shelter for battered women in the state. As our services continued to grow in response to community needs, we established offices in New Britain and Bristol and victim advocates on-site in our regional court. In recent years, we have experienced significant growth, both in our capacity to serve and the demand for our services. In 2009, we opened Rose Hill, home to our newly added transitional and permanent supportive housing programs. Victims of domestic violence often cycle back and forth between living in their violent home, with friends or family, in shelters, and on the streets. Although domestic violence impacts all races, religions, ethnicities, and socioeconomic groups, it disproportionately impacts low-income individuals with limited resources and options. With the opening of Rose Hill, our clients now have access to safe, affordable housing at the end of their shelter stay, providing a practical, lasting solution to one of the most difficult challenges victims face, especially those with children. In addition, clients are provided with wrap-around support services to overcome the emotional, physical, and financial impacts of domestic abuse, including individual and family counseling, health care, budgeting and parenting workshops, job trainings, benefits advocacy, and much more. Today, PCC is one of the few programs in the country offering the complete spectrum of shelter, housing, and support services needed to address both the immediate and long-term needs of victims, helping them heal and move forward to safe, self-sufficient lives, free from violence. These include basic needs, such as safety, food, clothing, and shelter, to more complex needs, such as legal advocacy, parenting support, and safe, affordable housing. Services include: • Emergency Shelter & Crisis Hotline: 22-bed emergency shelter for victims and their children, staffed 24/7 to ensure the immediate safety of victims, providing crisis counseling, safety planning, referrals, and access to our shelter; • Transitional Living: 8 apartments where homeless victims of domestic violence and their children may stay for up to 2 years while receiving case management and wrap-around support services as they work toward their individual goals; • Permanent Supportive Housing: 20 apartments where homeless victims of domestic violence with physical and/or mental disabilities and their children may live indefinitely while receiving wrap-around support services to achieve maximum independence; • Community-Based Intervention Services: counseling, support groups, safety-planning, information and referrals for non-residential clients and their children provided through our New Britain and Bristol offices; • Court Advocacy: outreach, advocacy, and support for all victims of family violence crimes processed through our regional criminal court, as well as advocacy for civil and criminal matters for all of our clients; • Children’s Services; individual and family counseling, support groups, arts/recreational programs, educational and mental health advocacy to support the health and well-being of children exposed to and/or impacted by domestic abuse; and • Community Education & Prevention Services: presentations and events for the public, trainings for first-responders and other service professionals, and prevention programs in schools, colleges and youth-serving organizations to raise awareness of domestic and teen dating violence, prevent future abuse, and promote healthy relationships. PCC is managed by an experienced leadership team coordinating the efforts of 40 highly skilled staff committed to service excellence. We are fortunate to have a long history of collaboration with the agencies and service providers with whom we work daily to meet the complex needs of our clients. Although we provide services to all who are in need, the vast majority of our direct service clients are low income. We offer services in English, Spanish, and Polish, and use the language line as needed. We are the only domestic violence agency providing these life-saving services to residents of Berlin, Bristol, Burlington, Kensington, New Britain, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington, and Terryville, Connecticut. We are a member of the Balance of State Continuum of Care, our local Continuum of Care, and provide leadership and staffing for our local Coordinated Access Network to reduce homelessness in our region. We are monitored biannually and held to a rigorous set of 82 standards by the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV). We are also monitored by HUD and three area United Ways. Through all of our programs, we reach on average 8,000 individuals annually from throughout the region and state.
