Mission Statement

The Windham Area Interfaith Ministry uplifts and unites our community by providing caring service and resources to meet our neighbors’ needs with dignity and respect.

About This Cause

WAIM provides a community safety net to our low or no-income clients, so that they may stay safely housed, meet basic material needs, and connect to resources that improve stability. We are a grassroots organization that provides basic needs to people in the Greater Windham area who are struggling financially. In 1984, WAIM was founded by an association of churches, synagogues, fellowships and concerned citizens responding to needs in the community brought about by high unemployment, a growing immigrant population, and loss of industry – not unlike the issues we face today. WAIM benefits from the moral, volunteer and financial support from 39 faith communities who comprise WAIM’s membership. WAIM’s core programs are Material Goods Redistribution and Human Needs. Through Material Goods, we distribute donated clothing, furniture, appliances and household goods for free to those who need them. Through the Human Needs Program, WAIM provides clients who are in financial crisis with short-term case management and advocacy as well as small grants to cover energy assistance, transportation, and other emergency needs that are not eligible for funding through other sources. In addition, Human Needs runs four seasonal programs: Back-to-School, where eligible children receive vouchers to help pay for school supplies and clothing; Gifts-for-Teens, where vouchers are given to the parents of teenagers so they may purchase an age-appropriate holiday gift for them; Adopt-A-Family Holiday Program, where eligible families are matched with donors who provide resources to allow for holiday celebrations; and For Kids Only, where WAIM collects new or slightly used items that children between the ages of five and twelve choose for holiday gifts for their parents or guardians. Our latest venture is the Partners in Independence Program, which offers clients long-term adult mentoring with the goal of increasing financial stability. At the heart of everything WAIM does is our Volunteer Program that includes individuals, seniors, church groups, student and civic groups, as well as Alternative Incarceration Workers and Community Service volunteers. We generally have at least twenty-five volunteers at work during the hours we are open to the public. Finally, WAIM hosts a thriving Community Garden at Lauter Park.
