Mission Statement
The purpose of Musicals at Richter is to: Provide affordable quality family entertainment to the greater Danbury area in the form of musical theater, operettas, musical revues, and children's theater. Give the opportunity to all area talent pursuing a theatrical career to bridge into professional quality theatrical productions through productions and youth instruction. Provide an opportunity for members of the community of all ages, and diverse backgrounds to participate in and experience professional quality theatrical productions. Musicals at Richter, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization and depends on the generous support of individuals, foundations and corporations.
About This Cause
Founded in 1985, Musicals at Richter, a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization, is Connecticut’s longest-running outdoor theater. Performances are given at the Richter Arts Center (next to the Richter Park Golf Course), 100 Aunt Hack Road, in Danbury. Nestled in the hills of Western Connecticut, the Arts Center stage has served as the scenic backdrop for over 100 musicals produced by Musicals at Richter, as well as a professional springboard for hundreds of up-and-coming performers. From June to August, a typical season consists of three main stage musical productions featuring mixed age and diverse background casts with a live orchestra; a summer youth musical theater workshop for young people, which culminates in a full-scale production; and Fairy Tale Theater, a daytime interactive play series for children performed by young actors. The winter storm of 2020 damaged Musicals at Richter’s performance facility severely, which is Danbury’s only theater facility, and left it unsalvageable. As a result, the performance facility is being rebuilt and expanded to meet both our present and anticipated future requirements. Our project encompasses all aspects that are necessary for a performance facility. Our glorious new stage with it's beautiful masking, wing, and proscenium walls have been completed!! Through fundraising, we have already paid $189,628.87 towards the cost! Unfortunately, we have a remaining balance of $157,517. We have a loan for the balance, and are making monthly payments. Future requirements for our Performance facility include: An orchestra pavilion; A steel lighting structure; A back wall / building; A roof; A storage / construction building; and a set construction area. These necessary aspects of our venue will need to wait until we pay off our current loan. Theater and the Arts are essential for building community, supporting development, nurturing health and well-being, and contributing to economic opportunity. This is an area of weakness in Danbury, CT. There is a vital need for more Arts in Danbury, and the inclusion and representation of all cultures. Musicals at Richter is the only Danbury theater company that has survived throughout the years, Our vision is the development of a first rate all inclusive performance facility. A facility that will not only allow for the continuation of high quality theater productions, but for an expansion of the Arts at Richter Park and throughout Danbury, CT. We are passionate about the importance of the Arts in our lives, and the much needed and important place it has in the world. We are dedicated to making this a reality. Once completed our facility will provide ample opportunities for members of the community of all ages, and diverse backgrounds to participate in professional quality theatrical, and in all forms of performance productions. It will allow for expanded youth instruction, and easier accessibility for all marginalized communities to share their talents. Our desire is for the expansion of availability and accessibility of the Arts in the greater Danbury Area, and is guided by the principles of the equitable growth of an all inclusive performance facility not only for the performers, but for the audience members as well. We are in the process of reaching out to other Danbury organizations for future collaborations that can only happen once our performance facility has been completed. These cultural events will include: A concert version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, accompanied by the Danbury Symphony Orchestra; Ballet performances; and most importantly, an event called “Celebrate Diversity”, which will be a celebration to showcase the diversity of our community. We have already spoken with City and State officials about the creation of this event where the many different Danbury communities, through performances, are given the opportunity to express and share their cultures and beliefs. Our theme for the first year will be “Children and Dance”. We plan for this to be an annual event, but it can only happen after our facility has been completed.
