Mission Statement
The Connecticut Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to Connecticut cancer patients and their families to assist with basic living expenses. The CT Cancer Foundation also funds cutting-edge cancer research.
About This Cause
The Connecticut Cancer Foundation provides financial assistance to Connecticut cancer patients and their families. CCF was founded in 1987 by former Yankee John Ellis, who lost a brother, sister, and sister-in-law to cancer, all before the age of 40. Then John was diagnosed with cancer, also before the age of 40. He made a promise that, if he survived, he would move back to his home state of Connecticut and start a foundation to financially assist cancer patients and to fund research. Fortunately, John survived and CCF was born. In the past 31 years, CCF has provided over $5 million in financial assistance to over 5,000 CT cancer patients and has funded over $1.8 million in research at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The CT Cancer Foundation identifies cancer patients that need assistance through an established network of oncology social workers at hospitals and cancer centers throughout Connecticut. The social workers help their patients apply for aid with a simple one-page application. This application is submitted along with a letter of referral from the social worker, a copy of the past year's tax returns, and a copy of the bill that the patient needs help to pay. Once CCF has the materials, we process the financial assistance quickly. If one cannot work due to a cancer diagnosis, it is easy to fall behind on monthly bills, such as rent, mortgage, and utilities. Providing financial aid is extremely important, as many cancer patients and their families are suddenly confronted with insurmountable bills at a time when focusing on healing is critical to their recovery. The stress of being unable to support themselves and their families is extremely detrimental to the health and prognosis of the patient. It is not uncommon to hear from an oncology social worker that a financially struggling cancer patient has to leave their home and move in with family/friends who may not be in a position to appropriately accommodate the additional members. Some end up sleeping on a couch during their treatment period; others not as fortunate find themselves in homeless shelters. Other patients may lack the resources to transport themselves to and from treatment. This directly impacts their prognosis, as adhering to the prescribed schedule of treatment, whether it is chemotherapy, radiation, or another treatment, is absolutely critical to defeating cancer. It is our hope that, by providing financial aid, CCF can help cancer patients in Connecticut focus on their health and recovery, instead of worrying about their bills. The Connecticut Cancer Foundation has received a four-star rating on Charity Navigator and a Platinum badge for transparency on Guidestar. CCF has been audited for 31 years and has always received a clean finding. In FYE 2017, the CT Cancer Foundation provided over $450,000 of financial assistance to CT cancer patients and their families. Our goal is always to increase the number of patients that we help and to increase the amount of aid that we give each patient.
