Mission Statement
The mission of Ebony Horsewomen is to use Equine Assisted Therapy, Growth and Learning to empower youth toward successful lives, to build leaders, deter destructive behaviors and increase academic achievement. And, for the overall betterment of the youth that we serve, we shall include engagement in community development activities directed toward economic development in an effort to help improve the physical, economic or social environment with attention to the needs of youth and their families. THE WORK: We stimulate the development of academic achievement, social skills, good mental and physical health and nutrition practices, as well as leadership and employability skills for urban youth; the, most of whom struggle in difficult family and financial circumstances, without resources and, often, without personal aspirations. Our purpose is to transform youth – to help them heal and realize and take responsibility for their own actions, and for the consequences of those actions. THE OBJECTIVE: Through the rigors, determination and perseverance involved the equestrian/academic training, equine assisted therapy, youth learn responsibility to develop and maintain strength of character, self-respect and leadership to help create an environment that is positive and enjoyable, and acquire academic achievement which is vital to their total development.
About This Cause
Ebony Horsewomen, Inc. (EHI) was founded in 1984 by Patricia Kelly an African-American Equestrian. EHI's mission is to empower youth toward successful lives through and by the use of horses and equine assisted therapy and agricultural activities. EHI operates a full service equestrian, therapeutic and agricultural organization operating 7 days a week, year around changing the culture of urban youth, through therapeutic approaches and animals and agriculture. Our avocation is the equestrian art, but our goal and our energies are dedicated to improving the lives and the mental health of youth, families and veterans. EHI's campus includes, equestrian and agricultural center with classrooms, admin. offices, library, tack shop, 2 stables for 18 horses, outdoor farm animal housing with over 10 species of domestic and exotic animals, 6000 sq. ft. heated Indoor Riding Arena, commercial cooking facility, 16 acre Hunter/Jumper field and Blue Pony Country Store. EHI operates in Hartford's 693 acre Keney Park, Hartford. The organization provides six programs : Equine/Animal Assisted Growth and Learning After School Program, an eight-week Summer Youth Day Camp, Saturday Science and Saddle Club in collaboration with 4-H Club, Young Ladies Dressage and Leadership Academy, Keney Kids, an urban agricultural farming program and Junior Mounted Patrol Unit ( Junior Park Rangers). EHI provides therapeutic services and programs for veterans, youth, families, schools, clinical agencies, government entities (Dept. of Children and Families and CT Juvenile Court and federal department of Juvenile Justice). EHI is certified under the State Dept. of Children and Families as a certified Therapeutic and Staff Support provider and has a full mental health department with licensed Therapists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW)and Masters of Social Worker (MSW) and Certified Nursing Assistants on staff. EHI is a certifying agency providing culturally competent training and certifications in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy.
