Mission Statement
Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Gifts of Love helps meet the basic needs of individuals and families in the Greater Hartford area experiencing a short-term financial crisis so they can return to self-sufficiency.
About This Cause
Founded in 1989, Gifts of Love is devoted to the needs of the community and responds to the needs of individuals and families who have been impacted by a financial crisis through the distribution of food, clothing and household necessities, empowering them towards a path to self-sufficiency. The organization primarily serves people facing a financial crisis due to reduced work hours, illness, divorce, death of a spouse/mate, exiting an abusive relationship, or a significant unexpected increase in expenses. By helping clients meet their most basic needs through food – including fresh produce from the Gifts of Love Farm, clothing, housewares and energy assistance through Operation Fuel, clients are able to divert their income to other necessities such as rent/mortgage, debt reduction, and medications/medical bills and regain their financial independence. About our Programs - The Food and Nutrition Program includes food pantries at our Avon and Hartford office locations. The food pantry enables clients to “shop” for food once per month and is stocked with a wide variety of non-perishable foods, paper goods, personal hygiene items, meats and fresh produce, including fruits and vegetables grown at Gifts of Love Farm. The Weekend Food Backpack Program distributes backpacks to over 300 students receiving free or reduced cost lunch in need in Avon, Canton, Farmington, Simsbury, West Hartford and New Britain with easy-to-prepare meals and drinks for the family for the weekend and snacks for the student for the week. Students receive their backpacks from their schools on Fridays and return them to their schools on Mondays. Clothes Closet: Clients can “shop” for in-season clothing for their families once per month. Linen Closet and Household Room: Offers clients an array of bed linens, towels, curtains, pots, pans, dishes and small appliances, which are particularly important to clients who are leaving a shelter, experiencing a divorce or have suffered a fire.
