About This Cause

The Enfield Food Shelf, Inc. (EFS) is a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to ensuring that no Enfield resident goes hungry due to a lack or resources. Since 1968, the priority of EFS has been to serve families and individuals needing food assistance. Each week, EFS assists an average of 400 families (more than 2,700 individuals). In addition to the supplemental food shopping for clients, EFS also prepares special distributions and items for clothing, shoes, basic needs and holiday celebrations. In addition to our weekly grocery program, EFS provides food assistance to the community in a variety of ways. Programs include bi-weekly Mobile pantry; monthly commodity assistance for qualified seniors; daily before and after school snacks for students K-8; daily snacks for students K-8 in summer camps; prepared lunches during summer and week-long school vacation breaks; comfort kits for unhoused individuals; comfort kits for police to distribute to children in trauma situations; 5 Meals for ALICE program educating young families about food and resources available; and, emergency outreach as well as satellite and sidewalk pantries. By developing resources based on community need, Enfield Food Shelf strives toward its vision of a community where everyone has access to nutritious food and regularly distributes the equivalent of more than 540,000 meals annually. Grocery-style shopping is open to residents on a weekly basis during hours of operation which are typically Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours of operation may change due to availability of product, weather and/or holidays. Primary source of food donations is the Enfield community. Groups from schools, businesses, churches, civic organizations and sports organizations have generously collected food the EFS. EFS also utilizes local food banks and grocery rescue to supplement food for distributions. Contributions from many individuals and families are also received. Monetary donations make it possible to purchase additional food and help meet operating costs. Donations may be mailed to P. O. Box 699, Enfield, CT 06083 or completed online at our website via PayPal. EFS gratefully accepts any unopened food and personal care items. Suggested items include canned items, boxed meals, beverages, paper products, produce, as well as refrigerated and freezer items. In the past, residents and organizations from the Enfield area have been generous with contributions of food and money. As demand grows, EFS is constantly challenged to serve a greater number of people in need. If you have contributed in the past directly to EFS or through fundraising events such as the Annual Donation Challenge, Walk Against Hunger, Rally Against Hunger or Town-wide Tag Sale, we thank you and ask for your continued support. If you have not yet participated, EFS and the clients it serves would greatly appreciate your support through tax deductible contributions of food or money. If you are a group, organization or business interested in assisting EFS by organizing a fundraiser or food drive, please contact us at 860-741-7321. For more information on what is needed at EFS, be sure to visit our website at www.enfieldfoodshelf.org.
