Mission Statement
Loaves & Fishes Ministries, a tax-exempt charitable organization, provides human services in Hartford, CT. Our basic programs revolve around our soup kitchen, started two decades ago on Asylum Hill. We serve an average of 135 meals each day, Monday through Friday. Our related programs have developed in response to changing client needs. Our mission is to provide the means for motivated individuals to move themselves out of the cycle of poverty and addiction into sober, responsible lives. This starts with providing nutritious food to those in need.
About This Cause
Loaves & Fishes Ministries was founded in 1982 and has been serving residents of the Asylum Hill neighborhood for over 32 years as an independent non-profit organization intent on change. Clients report their lives have been changed because they come to the soup kitchen hungry and leave having eaten what is often their only hot meal of the day. We do not only provide food to the hungry, although we continue to serve a growing number of clients each day. During our noon meal, we also provide clothing for clients, weekly pantry bags for families and full bagged meals for all clients once or twice a week, referrals for HIV+ testing and counseling, social service contacts and entry into our other applicable programs, and special holiday offerings. We have many highly collaborative services that involve the Charter Oak Rice Heights Health Van, Latino Community Services, Foodshare, and of course over 250 volunteers from more than 30 organizations serving in our soup kitchen. • Morning Program: provides information and education about legal issues, HIV/AIDS (prevention and blood screening), housing opportunities, literacy information, substance abuse, and employment counseling. We refer clients to the Latino Community Services for HIV/AIDS blood-pulls and counseling with a trained representative. Loaves & Fishes provides the highest number of contacts for this agency. • Pantry Program: provides weekly bags of groceries to families who must meet verifiable requirements (residence in Asylum Hill, dependents in the household, poverty level to low-income). • Sewing Program: offers women the chance to acquire employable sewing and tailoring skills • Business Initiative$: an extension of job training that implements the possibility of self-employment. Our comprehensive business training program, Business Initiative$, began business training courses in October of 1999 and the financial literacy and business training components were integrated into our newest program, Skill Builders, in the fall of 2012. • Opening Doors Program: serves as an entry point to the public workforce system for individuals with language barriers. • Skill Builders: a new educational and training program that will enhance the work readiness of clients with multiple barriers to employment. We offer classes in financial literacy, money management, customer service and personal development skills, computer, and work readiness (interviewing, dress & presentation, etc.). Clients complete modules / competencies in each subject area. Graduates move into our Opening Doors program as appropriate.
